What sort of idiot garages do you have around your area?
That engine is a variant of the Mitsubishi Orion. As simple as they get.0 -
Neons have a bad reputation for blowing their HG early and often and originally the parts prices were sky high. (Around £200 for the HG set if I remember rightly). I suppose once the dog has a bad name a lot of garages just don't want to get involved and as they have such low residuals anyway, might be good advice, if the owner needs to pay someone else to do the job, to sell as is.0

sorry to inform you but the MK1 had that HG problem and was corrected in 1999 with a MLS HG. and chrysler corrected cars affected by it not so much a recall but extended warranty to those who suffered the problem. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Neon_engine.
this engine has the MLS gasket in it. it should have the spring loaded tensioner too, but going back through his paper work he got when he bought it an old reciept says hyd tens/tim kit from chrylser. could of been wrong part returned but paperwork kept the same for simplicity.
i know of one garage that may take it on i'll pop over with him in the morn and find out the crack on why no one wants to do it.0 -

I think Neons of this age are firmly in the run it with basic maintenance till it breaks zone, by that I mean do the usual servicing, brakes etc, but any big ticket items that are not safety related get avoided.
I have only heard horror stories when it comes to the Neon.0 -

That's fair enough, and they aren't good cars it must be said (Chrysler took a fundamentally strong Mitsubishi powertrain design and gubbed it in an effort to save money) but even so they aren't difficult to maintain and I don't understand why a garage would not take the money.
I had a Daewoo that was a cheapskate version of a Vauxhall design. Now admittedly Daewoo did (and do) a far better job of engineering than Chrysler but even so, their cars tend to be run on a shoestring from an early age (the fact that some of them are still going at 13-14 years old despite that actually says a lot about how decent they actually are).
Did this stop me getting that car fixed (including a cambelt change)? Did it heck. Mechanic was more than happy to do the job.0 -
it being taken on now, i thought my friend was going to cry when he said their a bit of a pain to do, but ive done them before and have reverted the old hydrolic tensioners back to the spring ones too, but yeh ill do it no probs, he looked relieved in a sense.
they can be a pain in the backside, mate said, and most garages around here havent even been near this engine before so not familliar with them so instead of rising to the challenge wimp out of it.
whatever happened to a mechanic actually doing some learning??0
