In fact they didn't have a lot of choice. They were never going to get a mortgage, unless they won the pools.

I remember reading quite a lot about the massive extension of home ownership via building societies in the 1920s and 1930s.

Not to mention the opportunity to buy very cheap plots of land and throw up your own asbestos shack on it.

My Grandmother, the wife of a copper, bought a 6 room detached Victorian brick built house in the home counties circa 1930 for 250 quid; some 100 pounds cheaper than the price it was sold for in 1870 by the speculative builder.

I especially enjoyed the new "partner" the the criminal mastermind was intending to (virtually) install in the property of the single council tenant, so that they could have a (virtual) bust up in nine months time and then her (virtual) lover could storm off into the night with a four figure bribe and she, poor, destitute, abandoned, woman could apply for the (real) tenancy.

It is not new, I can remember discussions in the 1970's about how to sub let your council flat and buy a house in a booming property market.

The programme about the golden age of Council Housing is on again tonight BBC2 @ 19:00
