You also need to advise the insurance company you wish to reatin the plate in the event of it being written off. If you dont do this the plate becomes theirs in the event of a write off.

Check your insurance too, they'll charge for the modification.

People with private plates (or any personalisations) are deemed more likely to be involved in accident... Something to do with having more to prove out on the roads, being quicker to anger and driving more aggressively due to feeling superior to others.

Alos peoplewith private plates clearly have more money than sense, so copmpnaies take this view and charge them as such! Good on them really lol.

As for the original question - yes they can charge you. It's just one of the MANY costs involved in having a private numberplate, sadly!

It states very clearly in my Santander Consumer Finance PCP agreement that a £30.00 charge is payable for a change of VRM.

Even worse I bet they'd charge it again if you took the plate off prior to returning the car to them

Didnt think to check as never bought a private plate b4.

And yes bet they would charge again if I was to replace with the original number plate.

    Oh well, live n learn.

Hopefully will pay the car off b4 we sell etc.

Thankfully the insurance hasn't charged me for making any changes, so thats a blessing.

^^ Internet article actually, might have been the AA.... It was about "modifications" and why the insurance companies see more risk in someone who personalises their vehicle, the list included private number plates.

Aah, then it must be true. :wall:
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark
  • I've got a private number plate with my name on - sadly I had to change my name by deed poll to GH06HGK!
I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling ;)

Or alternatively do what I did and don't tell the finance company. (I've onlytold the DVLA and my insurance Company.)

I just have to tell them the registration number that they have on their records if ever I have to speak to them.

They could take a dim view of this...

Don't know what they could do apart from levying the £30 charge though, I don't think there's room in the agreement for anything else.
