Free-to-View Sky TV

I have been on my six months half price subscription for Sky TV and its coming to an end, so I am thinking of cancelling my subscription. I am assuming that you get to keep your equipment and your viewing card. Does this mean that I will be able to view all the channels that are currently free to view - see below link:

Does anyone know if I could still record programmes on my SKy + box?

Does anyone have experience of this, please, please, please

When we cancelled sky, we got all the usual free channels but you don't get e4 etc which you would with freeview.
I'm not sue about the sky-box bit but I would doubt it.
They will probably offer you another deal though, so see what it is first.

Why is a person that handles your money called a broker?!
  • My Sky+ still works which is ironic considering it rarely worked when I was paying them due to their enforced "system updates". Thats down to the box not the subscription.

The channels are as described in the link in your original post.

You might find though that you're still contracted in for another 6 months after the introductory offer ends.

I cancelled my Sky but asked if I could keep the Plus facility so I am able to record etc. Sky said I could and I pay £10 per month for this.

Apart from the question about which channels you get now, can I ask just one more question...
I currently have a SKY+ box downstairs and a Sky box upstairs, paying £47 per month.

Could I theoretically cancel my subscriptions to Sky Sports/etc and (as I own the boxes) just get the channels that you get on both boxes, and pay SKY only £10 a month to use the recorder.....
  • I can't believe people want to pay £10 a month to record programs ?!?!?! Get a DVD recorder or just use your VCR if you want to record. Or if you really need to pause live telly buy a free view box with build in hard drive. You can get them for less than £100 so after 9 months it's paid for itself and you don't have to pay out another penny.
  • Have to agree with toontastic here and about your Sky contract, Sky have a minimum 12 month contract thing going and they don't let you go without getting thier cash.

So although your half price offer has finished you will have to continue paying the full price for the next 6 months till your 12 months is complete or pay them the remaining 6 months in one go and cancel the contract, but then you would have paid for something you aren't getting, so you are basically stuck with them for another 6 months, at this point i would go out and by a hard disk recorder rather than pay sky £10 each month for using thiers.

    Sammy,

Apparently you can see which channels are 'free' by just removing the viewing card.

With a Freesat or expired subscription card, you would also get Channel 4, Channel 5, Five USA, Five Life and SKY3

    (so I'm told.............)

    Cheers

Steve700: This is exactly what I did. I had Sky+ downstairs and a second box upstairs and now thay just work as freeview boxes.
I get the freeview channels so I don't get things like E4 or more4 but I found that I rarely watched anything other than BBC or ITV so that is why I got rid of Sky.
With regard to paying to have the facility, unfortunately I do not have the £100 in my pocket to go out and buy a hard drive recorder and if you want one that is anything like as good as the Sky one than they are a lot more than £100. Sky+ does not just record but I can set series link so I can follow a soap or particular programme and I am not tied to setting the DVD recorder every day, I can also watch another channel while DH is recording something. For me this is my one luxury and I pay for this instead of going out or smoking or drinking!

arent Sky subscriptions for a minimum 12 month period, so if you cancel before then you would still have to pay till the 12 months is up.
