Or the most probable answer is you have a poor credit rating.
Yes, a poor credit rating in the sense that I have no history besides a mobile contract.
Still would have thought my bank would know more about my ability to repay than anyone else though.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”

Edgy whilst we have disagreed plenty recently...
Poor credit history and lack of one as i'm sure you'll know are very different things.
I know your a student from our past discussions but this might help you.
If you have limited credit history (not bad history) and you have any student overdraft then its likely your bank will consider any amount you have in borrowing with them already if that's the case. Even if you don't and you have a student account with 'guaranteed' limits it may well take those limits you could call upon into account.
As a student there are quite a few card providers that will take you - some without taking up their student accounts. You'll easily find that all are more competitive then vanquis and as a student they'll be working upon the basic income you get - whatever that happens to be

Yeah, I only have the VQ for credit history anyway. No sense in not paying it off on time.
I plan to keep it 6 months and then see what I can get. I believe I may have had too many applications as I went for prime cards first on a long shot.
Cheers though.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”

From personal experience and that of people i lived with natwest student credit card, halifax student, barcalycard student seem to take anyone although like i say if you have an account maybe not because theres anything wrong with you its just they are extending their own risks.
Just make sure you apply for the dedicated student ones not the mainstream - i guess it'll be a combination of a lower limit but probably less off a score required so a trade off which might work.
Either way your vanquis one will probably have put you in good stead for ones already and handy for any purchases where using a cc is handy. Providing your applications arent excessive i think you'll stand a good chance anyway even if you've had a few - if you have access to your credit files you can see who they searched you with and maybe apply for one with equifax that hasnt or vice versa with experian.
Another idea for you might be to take a new student bank account (not necessarily with the intention of using it) and tick the box for the credit card that comes with them - some again have guarantees if your accepted for the account they'll give you a credit card - you can then close just the bank bit once you have the card.
I've no hard proof that getting a student account is easier then a credit card but again just from my experience and people i know they were declined for cards more often then accounts (in fact i can think of anyone who was rejected for an account with anywhere - although i know as people mention on here it does happen).
Food for thought i suppose. And i'm definitely with you on ultimately paying as little or nothing on interest as possible :-)0
