Forgotten cheque refund from Insurers

Hi All
Back in 2003 my mum cancelled the insurance on her holiday home.
Don't know how but we missed the cheque from the insurers refunding the remaining policy. We've had a clear our today and found it, 8 years later!
I know (or think I know) that cheques are only legally valid for 6 years so I'll have to call them and see if they'll be helpful and reissue her a new one! So I'm clued up in advance, does anyone know if we we've waived our rights to the refund now by not cashing the cheque after all this time?
Thanks lot's for any help in advance!
Regards
Richard :j:j

The legal right to chase the debt expires after 6 years, and most organisations only keep their records for the minimum necessary time, so it seems unlikely that your mother has any recourse. She can phone up and ask the insurance company, of course, but after this amount of time they'll probably be unable to help as they may not even have any records about her having policy with them!0
