PCs gone kapoot now I'm afraid, on start up won't get past black screen saying...

Windows coud not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

    \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the orginal Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

    I don't have a setup CD......Any ideas!!!

    Your registry is corrupt.

    options are

    try last known good config

run chkdsk on it, from a borrowed disc or boot floppies. (sometimes works)

stick disk in another machine or usb hard disk caddy, and recover your data, then reinstall from a borrowed windows disc, or factory restore partition if one is available on your machine.

Your previous posts suggest a logical or possibly physical hard disk problem, the former is fixable, the latter isn't - new hard disks are around £35

Last known Config won't work, says the same thing.

I tried running Chkdsk on it when it did turn on but that didn't work so don't know how I whether it work from a disc. (No floppy drive on my PC).

So I need to find a Windows XP disc then? What's a factory restore partition (sorry, am not at all IT literate!)?

Half tempted to buy a new PC lol....

factory restore, google it for your model or post details, it's usually in the manual, and involves pressing a key at boot

this is usually an indication that you have a factory restore partition

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Recguard] C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\RECGUARD.EXE

so leave the buy a new pc until you try it (after backing up data).

Ok, I had a Google and can there's a system recovery system on my PC which I have accessed. I have three options:

Non-Destructive System Reovery - Tried this but won't work because I've had service packs or something installed.

    System Recovery - No Format
    System Recovery - Quick Format

I haven't tried the other two because I'm not sure whether or not I lose Windows XP by doing them plus I'm no sure if I need some sort of disk that came with the PC, I'm pretty sure nothing came with the PC like that but will double check if I can remember where on Earth I've put everything.

First things first I'm going to have a bacon butty.
