Hi!
Can anyone give me a rough idea how much an average funeral might cost nowdays.
It would be a catholic funeral so church fees, choir etc.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Can't help you with church stuff, but we paid £1675 for coffin, hearse and 2 limos, all crematorium fees and newspaper (£52.00)

Discuss with the local parish priest.
When my first husband died we had a Requiem Mass for him (we were both practising Catholics then). I refused to have limousines - hate them, so that cut down on the cost. There wasn't a choir. I insisted on having his coffin received into church the evening before - that's traditional in Catholic funerals, and in fact my daughter and I found it was a great help, because we were allowed to stay there with him quietly, talking to him, reading poetry, reciting prayers etc and we did all our crying then so that we were composed at the actual funeral. Although other people were a bit surprised, they were waiting for the hearse to arrive with the coffin as in other denominations, and were surprised when I went in first saying 'he's already there'. I personally think that's a lovely idea - leaving him in church overnight, alone with his God.
That was 1992, costs will be different now. We didn't have flowers or newspaper - donations in lieu of flowers were to the British Heart Foundation.

Thank you Margaret and ASG.
My dad is dying from lung cancer and i want to sort a few things out in my head before the worst happens.
I remember my nans catholic funeral had a choir and my nan left from her house on the day of the funeral.
I have discussed things with my mum and we both think that it would be fitting to have my dad in church overnight before the funeral.
Many thanks for your help.0 -
As a minister, I never charge (which goes to the church anyway) for the priviledge which is mine for conducting funerals for members of my congregation - it is, after all their spiritual home. By now Jummy, in view of your dad's illness, you should be receiving regaulr pastorla care visits. The next time your priest calls, have a word with him about your concerns - we are used to this, and he will not be alarmed, and it will all help with your planning. Having the deceased in church overnight, as Margaret has described can be beneficial in many ways, and is not so unusual. Most importantly, please be aware that I am praying for your Dad and your family . God Bless you.0

hi, I am sorry to hear of your sad news. My dad passed away suddenly 18mths ago and if I remember right it cost approx £2400 that was wake, coffin, 3 limos, flowers all church fees and newspaper announcements. I'm not sure if it makes a difference but I am in Gloucestershire.
My thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time,
Claire x
i forgot to add that this also included a large donation to the british legion who provided my dad with a representative on the day as he served in the forces so had the British Legion say a few words etc They also lay a wreath every poppy day in remembrance of the time he served for his country - was your dad a forces man that would appreciate this?

Hi Jummy,
My mum has just investigated this. We live in Hastings, but my mum has a two person plot in Morden Cemetery. She bought it years ago. It's near my Grandparents plot. She was told that we would have to pay £1600 because she doesn't live in the Borough. The Hearse, 1 car, Minister and service would be about £2500, but that's prices down here. I don't know if there are regional differences.
Please know that I am thinking of you, and hope this helps a bit.I Believe in saving money!!!:T

Hi. First of all sorry to hear of your loss.
My mum died at christmas last year - the funeral (a burial) cost me £4,500 and that was a package deal as well. Apparently funerals in London are much more expensive. Also, as another poster here has pointed out, my mum lived in another borough but I wanted her buried near to me so there was quite a hefty fee involved because she wasn't a resident in my borough.
I'm still paying the bill off now :-(0
