You just have to keep it all in perspective. We are still much richer than we were 30 years ago, and still far wealthier than many folk in the world. The doom mongers completely overdo things in thier minds. In fact we are at the dawn of a new boom of course. Always keep in mind that in all years of thier lives, doomists will tell you things are about to get worse one way or another.
I remember one of them in 1997/8 telling me not to buy property as it had peaked and was deffo about to crash. There was a book written in 1993 by Lord Rees Mog which portended a massive world depression due about 1995.

as with any recession/downturn/budget deficit meltdown, if you lose your job and can't get another one you're screwed.
a relatively small number of people lose everything and the majority who keep their jobs say things like "but i couldn't get a table in the local restaurant so there clearly isn't anything wrong".0
