Train Fare Rises

Having read about the increase in train fares I have decided that I am going to have to do something to prevent my budget going completely mad!

I travel from London to Swansea every Friday night and back on a Monday morning. I used to use the 1st Apex (leaving at 19:15 on Fri and returning 6 am on Monday) which cost £53. When they changed the tickets I was forced onto single fares and now pay anything between £60 - £80 to go out standard class at 19:15 returning at 7am (I would rather 6am but that just pushes the price up).

As they are scheduled to put the prices up AGAIN I was wondering if anyone can see any better ways of me doing this trip? Unfortunately, Swansea no longer has an airport and the buses do not work on the Mon morning (would have to leave at 4am to get into London by 10!)

Any ideas welcomed!!

:o

    Hi,

I've had a look and can't see much to suggest, it does seem to be around £60 - £80. Its that monday morning train that is the killer - 50 quid and they have plugged all the loop holes. If you travelled to London on the Sunday night you could get the trip cost down to £25-£30 quite easily.

I used to have an agreement with my employer that I worked from home/on the train on a Monday morning and got into the office for 1pm, maybe that would be an idea?
  • Thanks for looking - I know it is a real pain! So annoying that they can just change the system and end up practically doubling fares  ! I will start working from home on a Mon I think although it seems crazy that this has to be done purely due to FGW's ticketing. The whole thing seems crazy particularly as the Fri night train has got so full it is like a tube since the changes ARGHHH
