advice needed re halifax credit card

hi.
i have a halifax credit card that i have had for several years. i am in the forces and a few years back made several late payments due to being out of the country. i have since resolved this matter by setting up a direct debit for the minimum payment each month and this has been ongoing for over a year. i had wanted to pay more than the minimum paymant but was told that is not possible. you either pay the minimum or the full balance each month by direct debit. (this is not the case with any other company i have dealt with).
i have been away for the last 3 month and have just got back to find out that my limit has been dropped even though i am paying what they have requested. i am now over my limit and they have added charges to my account. i have made a payment to pay off this over limit amount but dont understand why they are allowed to do this. i have been paying what the have requested. if they had wanted more money each month they could have taken it???? i have not used the card in over a year and was just working my way through paying of the balance.
halifax are also the most difficult company to pay. you cannot make payments buy card unless u have a halifax current account so you just have to go into the bank. thats a little difficult when im deployed 2000 miles away!!!!
is there any way i can claim back these charges and is it possible to close the account and just pay off balance. would they freeze the interest?
i am likely to be going away again in the next few months and do not want to come home to 6 months worth of charges etc if they do this again.
can you please help?

Go into a branch and speak to someone face to face. You get a much better response and take proof, ID card, that you are in the forces.
DD did this with another cc and they removed all the charges.
  • thanks for the reply. i will try that

Halifax branch staff have no authority to make any credit card decisions.

They cannot even see 95% of card information.

A branch visit is a waste of everybody's time.

Ring the number on the back of the card.

    Wrong.

When you set up a direct debit with Halifax, you have the choice of:
    (i) Minimum payment
    (ii) Fixed amount
(iii) Fixed % of the outstanding balance
    (iv) Full amount

    Wrong.

Look at the back of your statement for the options of how you can pay.

It is possible to pay from any current account, at any bank.
