  • Hi Messies.
JPS, I have a little cassette player and some old story tapes, mostly Agatha Christies...the voice of Joan Hickson INSTANTLY sends me to sleep! The tapes stop when they get to the end - but if I wake up, I rewind a bit, press play , fall asleep again. The overall effect is like someone ripped out all the pages and shuffled them a bit before she reads. A bit surreal but it works for me!
Alec E -very windy here too, seems to make everywhere get dusty quicker. And sunny, which shows it up!

Again, I`ve done very little. I learned to text while I was in hospital (not bad as I`ve had the phone 4 years and finally bit the bullet out of necessity!!!) First few messages were a bit strange, but recipients just about got the gist. Have caught up with folks on text today, but still don`t like mobile phone & don`t intend to get into it much.
Am about to `escape` to Mr M`s with DGD`s mama now, am very excited but had to promise not to overdo it etc...

I love that idea Emm, beats a physcial book! I sometimes used to read Harry Potter books to put me to sleep but had to stop when I woke up at 3am with the imprint of a book spine all down my face

Well after the howling gales earlier this week I have to repair my fence - the second-to-last elderly larchlap panel has disintegrated but the posts are still in and sound, so being unable to afford a professional job, I'll nail some wood struts on to those and then attach reed screening.

I've done that where other fence panels have bitten the dust, and once plants are growing it looks nice and seems windproof... the wind seems to go through them instead of taking them out like it does dodgy panels.

Well, I'm not as beat as I normally am on a Friday evening... I suppose it is only one week into the term though! I doubt much housework will get done, just essentials again.

Hope all messies are well, have a great weekend all!

    Evening Messies.

Emms, I assume the trip to Mr M's (or should I say 'journey' rather than 'trip'? ;) ) went ok. Well done for learning to text. It's a case of necessity with me and the DDs, especially DD2. If we didn't exchange texts, our communications would be very few and far between! I loved your description of 'wearing' the grapefruit. I so know what you mean. No matter how carefully you think you've prepared the fruit, it always fights back, doesn't it?

Alec e, well done for freshening up the spare bedroom, and that's a pretty thorough freshen up! Better now than in a rush when someone's coming to stay.

Jps, I can appreciate that the imprint of a book spine on your face isn't a good look. I've never got on with listening to stories, but then I never have trouble getting to sleep. Staying asleep is another matter entirely. So, you're quite handy with hammer and nails, are you? Useful, especially as you seem to make a good job of it! Enjoy your weekend, before going back into battle next week.

The course at the start of the week wore me out, mentally and emotionally, but I didn't sleep particularly well. The last 2 nights, I seem to have caught up with my sleep and, with that, came a burst of energy. The house is reasonably clean and tidy - bathroom done most days, kitchen cleaned a bit at a time over a couple of days, dusting done yesterday, and vacuuming today. Washing's been done over the last two days, with yesterday's dried in the conservatory, and today's in the garden! :jI had intended to wash the kitchen and bathroom floors today, but I decided to take advantage of the fine weather, and dig over the side border in the front garden, where we had the hedge removed some months ago. It had a very rough dig over, but needed a finer dig to remove stems, roots, and a lot of rubbish, and break up large lumps of clay. Took me about an hour while OH was out. He was very impressed, and told me I shouldn't have done it by myself. I may well think exactly the same when I wake up tomorrow, but it looks so much better now.:)

Sequeena well done! The interior of my fridge was for years a bit like the deepest Congo... you didn't know what you'd encounter if you went exploring. However the Shiny New Fridge is staying more clean and tidy... so far!

Bearcub, I have to admit I pride myself on being able to do most things garden-related, but I am a disaster when it comes to things like plumbing - a few years ago my dad received a panic call to come and rescue me when I tried to change a washer in the kitchen tap and ended up with water spurting everywhere! Since then the local odd job plumber gets those jobs (poor old dad is too frail now).

Well done on all the demessying as well, and good to hear you're out there in the garden too and getting washing dried on the line... I love that smell! I can't leave mine out on work days as I'm out too early and back too late - birds would poo on it and all sorts. So ungrateful, I feed them and they poo on my clean sheets!

I felt pretty ill whilst cleaning it, can't believe I happily put our food in there. It's a wonder we've not fallen ill

    Afternoon all

So my news. Well, DS1 is very poorly with a chest infection. Apart from a snooze on the sofa I have been up with him since 3am. Strangely I am buzzing, maybe its because I have had lots of coffee but I am sure it wont be long before I crash! Its sounds very selfish but I am onto my 3rd day of staying at home looking after him and I am going a tiny bit stir crazy. Of course I should be using this time to declutter, clean, reorganise and generally do things but its not really happening. He is mostly just sleeping or watching telly bless him so I dont really have an excuse.

Well done on the fridge Sequeena!

Lots of gardening going on around here. We have big plans to finish off our front garden this year. New fence, plants, gravel etc. Hopefully doing a bit of plant shopping tomorrow if DS is well enough to go out.

Hope you arent suffering after the digging Bearcub! JPS, your fence sounds a bit like ours. Well no, thats not fair really. Ours is reaching the point where there are so many gaps that you cant even really call it a fence any more.

Emm, my hubby goes to sleep most nights listening to the radio with his headphones in. Strange isnt it because I think it would keep me awake. You keep taking it easy.

And ah, yes, the crickets. Was that really last year?

So, off to do something productive, maybe. But the dog is now asleep on my lap snoring so I dont really want to move him ...
  • Hi Messies!
Sequeena, well done on the fridge.
Bearcub & JPS, well done on the garden jobs.

Re Reading in Bed - I have given this up since wrecking one set of frames and waking up endless times with my specs stuck to my face! The book usually gets down into the bed, and if it`s a hardback ends up with a corner poking at my knees!!
Re Grapefruit - I have long given up on any preparation... as I like it (pink or normal) without any sugar, I peel it and eat it segment by segment, like an orange. It`s just that the segment skins are tough, so I pull a buit off and scrape the innards out with my teeth, trying to slurp the juice at the same time. It`s not something you`d do in polite company, and as it`s quite noisy it`s best done when you have the house to yourself. But at least you don`t get squirted in the eye this way, and (very MS) there`s a lot less waste - apart from the bits you end up wearing....
The trip to Mr M`s was WONDERFUL! DGD`s mama took us in my car, as it`s been standing awhile, and it was weird sitting in the passenger seat. SO nice to get out and browse around a shop though... got a huge turkey leg, and some bunched fresh herbs - these are in the big oblong `pseudo le creusot` now and smelling very good. I`ll do several meals with the outcome, and freeze some.
Had another rummage in caravan of Doom yesterday. I found a too-hefty kitchen tongs (think they were meant for barbies) that I`d fallen out with and stashed in there as spares. They are IDEAL for picking things up off the floor, or, for that matter, for putting things down, as I`m still not supposed to squat/crouch. This restriction has upset my relationship with the cat. Before my op, she used to frequently come and ponch at my belly and purr, like she thought there were kittens in there! Now, of course, I don`t let her near my abdo as it`s still a bit delicate. On top of that, when she yowls for food, and it can`t possibly wait till another member of the household can oblige, I`ve been opening a pouch, putting it in her dish and bending only so far then dropping the dish - like I`m flinging her food at her in a huff!
I`m going to sit outside now as it`s really warm, and am trying to catch up on a bit of letter-writing. I shall ignore garden messiness as there`s bu$$er all I can do about it!
  • YL - hope your DS is feeling better soon - I started the post much earlier on and only just remembered I hadn`t actually finished it and posted it till now.

Hope your DS is better soon YL.

Glad the shopping trip was good Emm!

I spent the day fixing the blown-out fence - I've managed to do it with some reed screen and wooden struts, made into a sort of homemade trellis-like affair. I'm quite pleased with the result. I've left a little hedgehog passage as well - he/she/they come snuffling along and into my garden through there.

I wanted to mow the lawn as well but ran out of steam. I think we're forecast rain for tomorrow so that will probably have to wait till the next fine weekend day now - this is when the grass really can get away from me and I end up haymaking at half term (if I'm lucky with the weather).

Tomorrow I will do a bit of tidying in the house and hoover the middle bits - nothing too serious. I managed to change the bed this evening before collapsing. My back muscles are a bit sore so I'm now sitting with a hot water bottle on it - bliss!

Hope everyone is well and having a happy Saturday night - take care all.
