Hello!

Hope everyone is well this evening!

I'm wondering if anyone has any wonderful and NEW ideas to generate an extra small income?

I've read through many of the threads on this forum however none of them seem ideal for me...there's only so much stuff you can sell on eBay!

So a bit about me...

I'm a 24 year old single female living in Edinburgh and have gone from a financial disaster to being in quite a good position in a matter of months. Although I do still have a bit of debt, it is being actively managed and because no interest is being charged, my focus is on saving.

Now, the problem is that I have become a bit OTT on my budgeting and savings spreadsheets and I don't want to reduce what I have planned to save...BUT I would like to buy a new car for myself at the end of next year (as part of my "get out of debt" plan, I terminated my finance deal on my car and my Dad gave me his old-but-reliable banger).

So, to be able to buy myself a new car next year, I would like to make around £200-300 a month - I just don't know how I'm going to do this.

So, this is what I do already:
  • I took in a lodger who moved in last week so that's an extra £350 a month - I have no more rooms to rent out
  • I do some survey sites although they aren't very profitable
  • I've sold as much as I possibly can via Gumtree (my Wii and some other bits and bobs)
  • I'm on a waiting list for a job with a text question service - have been for a while though so not much hope with this
  • Mystery shopping - registered on lots of sites but tend to only get a couple a month
This is what I'd like to avoid:
  • eBay - I don't have much left to sell and the fees don't make it worthwhile. I would be interested in any profitable buying and selling though.
  • Petsitting/childminding etc
  • Survey sites
  • Renting parking spaces, rent house as film location etc
  • Cutting costs - I've cut costs as much as possible and want to make some money from a new source
  • Extra part time job - I have looked about but I'm not the most sociable person so pub jobs not really my thing and there don't seem to be many weekend jobs about.
  • Exam invigilating - I work Mon-Fri 9am-5pm so not available during exam hours
  • Cleaning/Ironing - I can't even do my own, never mind anyone else's
I've read about matched betting and I already have a Betfair account but I'm not 100% happy with actual matched betting (bad experience in the past where I didn't read the small print and I had to wager 7 times my original deposit before withdrawing funds - got all the cash back in the end but not without a fight!).

I used to do a bit of backing and laying but obviously that's not 100% risk free. Definitely open to using betting accounts to make some extra cash though.

I'm currently doing a Census job and I am a Polling Clerk for the 5th May election so can rule them out too!

So...has anyone got some new and brilliant ideas that would be worth a go? Would like to find something I can either do for a few hours at the weekend or an hour or so every day.

Thanks in advance for your help! x

What about a car wrap when you get your new car? Youd get paid for companies to cover your car in an advert. Depends how large / how much of the car is covered as to how much you get paid.

Did register on a website that does this but haven't heard from them.

    Back to the drawing board...

see if you can get in contact with one of the drinks industry for this. Just lately I have seen a monster drink car driving about and red bull often advertise, especially with you living near a city centre as they will be more inclined possibly to advertise on your car so more people would see it.

  • You could try registering with some catering agencies for temp work for the weekends. If you don't have any experience, it will be e.g. washing up, clearing tables in hotels, works canteens etc.

Low basic hourly rate, but sometimes get time and a quarter/time and a half/double time for weekend work.

It could be long hours. Also, you could be contacted at short notice.

Hi - like you I work full time and have tried various ways of making a bit of extra money online. There's actually a lot of different ways of making money, it all depends on the time you've got to put in to it and what you consider worthwhile earnings (as money you make online is invariably less than you'd make offline).

Based on what has already been suggested/you are not interested in, I would suggest the following to try:

Freelance websites - http://www.odesk.com, http://www.peopleperhour.com are two I can think of. Lots of freelance assignments you can do from your computer. The easiest of these are writing online articles. You can probably get £2-£10 for a 500 word article, more if you have specialist knowledge that is in demand.

If you want to do writing, the pay is better with Demand Media / Demand Studios. They are a big American company, and pay about $15 per 400 word article. You have to apply to write for them, but if you get on I've heard that some people can do 2-3 an hour once they get going.

Adsense Sharing Sites - These are sites where you write content, and the site owners share the advertising revenue with you. Sites include http://www.hubpages.com, http://www.squidoo.com, http://www.webanswers.com, http://www.rateitall.com. Some people make a lot of money from these. I've used a couple of these sites fairly sporadically so not made a lot, but they do work (and pay).

If you want to discuss any of these, feel free to PM me. If you want more ideas, I'll try and find some good threads I've come across on other sites with more useful suggestions.

  • Have you looked at the Lionbridge threads on here? Good pay rates (none disclosure agreement means I can't say how much though!) Been working for them for 6 weeks and it's all pretty good. Choose your own hours, work at home...

    You could try:

stewarding at sports events/concerts - might be advertised in your local paper
    Online writing as mentioned above
Adult text/chat/webcam work depending on your views on this

Change jobs - if there are any jobs going that will give you the payrise you require?

Wow! It only took eight replies before someone suggested setting up an "Adult" webcam!!!! :-)

I like the idea of setting a target of £10 a day though, makes it sound more acheivable than saying £300 per month. I'm trying out going to car boot sales to find stuff to re-sell on ebay this weekend, that would be my suggestion, but I've not tried it myself yet, so can't say how successful it will be. (Now where's my webcam?)
    Bank Loans: [STRIKE]£25000[/STRIKE] £0- Barclay Card 14%: [STRIKE]£2500[/STRIKE] £0- Student Loan: [STRIKE]£12,500[/STRIKE] £0
    Current total [STRIKE]£40,000[/STRIKE] £0:j (100% PAID OFF)

Downhillfast - I actually applied for Lionbridge a few months ago but they said I was unsuccessful. I can't quite remember the application but I'm really good at applications and written work etc...

DS - not sure I'd be up for the webcam but would certainly do the texting! Will have a wee look into that! Thanks

Andy - Definitely a great idea with the car boots. Would like to specialise in a particular item/category but can't say I have any inklings of what they would be at the moment!

Thanks for all the great ideas - a lot of them are very promising! x
