Raised beds aren't the universal panacea - they have limitations as to what works well in them - but if I were in the OP's position they are the only thing I'd consider. As Mojisola says, with raised beds you could have crops this year. Spend four or five years trying to turn horrible soil into good stuff in a rented house? I wouldn't dream, of it, personally.0
