Litter for rabbits - anyone use Megazorb?

We currently use Bio Catolet paper pellets in our house rabbit's litter tray but it's getting quite expensive (a 25l bag only lasts about three weeks and is £10) so I've been looking for cheaper alternatives. Seems daft to be spending so much on something that just goes in the bin every day! I've read good things about Megazorb and it's very cheap compared to the Bio Catolet, but it looks like it could be a similar texture to wood shavings/sawdust, is this correct? We started using the paper pellets because wood shavings were getting tangled in her coat and causing mats, so I don't want the same problem again (she's long haired, although has been getting regular hair cuts for the past few months which has helped a lot).

Failing that, does anyone have other litter suggestions? Sheets of newspaper don't work as she just pulls the paper out and flings it around the room in a huff (wee and all!). I've also tried just using hay but it brings out her OCD side - she prefers her hay to remain in a neat little pile on the opposite side of the tray to the 'dirty corner', and spends a long time tidying it up and pushing it back into place if it gets messed up. So when I tried filling the whole tray with hay, you can imagine how unimpressed she was! She just pushed it all into the corner and did her business on the bare plastic with a disgusted look on her face :rotfl:

Thanks :D

I don't know much about rabbits so I'll apologise now if this is a stupid idea :o (and I'm sure someone will be along to tell me if it is :p).....

....could you use puppy pads? Like THESE? (but you can get them cheaper from £land/Home Bargains/Wilkinsons etc)

They sell them in packs of 4 or 5 in £land so it wouldn't cost much to give them a go :D

We use them for our dog (who's sick) and frankly he pees like a racehorse and they soak it all up - no mess no smell :D

Hi OP, your bunny sounds very houseproud! I have two, one cashmere lop who is prone to a messy bum :( and one who will eat literally anything such as newspaper, so litter trays have been an issue for me! The puppy pads look like quite a good idea. I have in the past month tried vetbed but found it impossble to wash with a little machine and as I'm in a flat I don't have a hose to wash it down with - that lasted 2-3 days before being saturated and chucked.
I am currently using carefresh which I have to say is great but slightly expensive - a 14l bag lasts just under a week but is very good for smells. I've been buying that from the range if you have one nearly, £2.99 a bag instead of £4.99 @ Pets @ home.
I have (on a whim) ordered an 85l bag of megazorb for £11.99 inc. delivery from farmway as it may work out more economical (compared to £16+ for a 60l bag of carefresh), but I will let you know how I get on with it!
  • Hi. I have a giant house rabbit, as well as rats and chinchillas. We used bio catolet for everyone as when we got the rats it was recommended as they can't have wood shavings, but we also found it quite expensive so I started looking for an alternative. Megazorb is great as it's safe to use for all the animals and saves us buying different types for different pets. It's great and probably lasts longer than bio catolet. It's a light brown colour and also lighter in weight but absorbs really well so doesnt get soggy like woodshavings. We really like it and buy 85 litre bags from Farmway.co.uk for £11.99 each incl. delivery.
    It lasts ages!
The rabbit has an enclosure that we made, there's a dog crate which we put the litter in and the food bowl, hay rack and water bottle are attached inside the cratge to minimise mess on the floor. The crate opens into a large puppy pen which is on the tiled floor in the kitchen. There's an old towel in there so that she can get off the hard floor and she loves to play with that and scrunch it up and crawl under it, great toy!
Also, to stop any mess flying out of the crate I got a cheap fleece blanket which sits underneath the tray that fits into it and comes up the sides to about halfway up, it works really well.

I use for my gpigs, and rats litter, its great!

I used to get it from farmway but they charge a bit more if you get a second bag. I get it from gwtitmuss now, as they don't increase the postage on 2 bags - so 2 will cost £20 inc. delivery, plus you can get cashback from topcashback.

    Excellent stuff and lasts ages!

Thanks for all the replies, looks like I'll be ordering some Megazorb tonight! I think she'd probably eat the puppy pads, and she uses a piece of vetbed to sleep on so that'd just confuse her I think. Hopefully she'll get on OK with the Megazorb, it'll certainly be easier on my pocket! I've just bought about a year's worth of hay from hayforpets for £24, so my bunny bills are reducing dramatically :j

She is a very houseproud bun, everything has it's place! God help me if I move things around in her bedroom (yes, she has her own room :o). She's 6 but living inside is new to her, we brought her inside just before xmas when her husbun died, and she's loving her new indoor life. She has free run of her room all day (which is a bit of a bunny playground - lots of toys, tubes, things to climb on, a digging box etc) and I let her out every night to run up and down the landing, which is prime binky territory! Once summer comes she'll get a few hours in the garden too. She spends her days lying on a chair under the window or flopped out on the floor, and she seems to be happy as larry. We did consider getting her a new bunny friend but she's quite set in her ways and can be a bit territorial, so I don't think she'd take too kindly to sharing her readigrass now! We've started calling her the merry widow :rotfl:
  • I've used Megazorb since getting my little clan of gerbils 2 years ago. I really recommend it for all small animals.

I've used Megazorb for my double maned lionhead who's very fluffy and it never caused any issues with matting/tangles.

Its great for bunnies, very absorbant.

Hi, I used to use Megazorb for my hamsters and they loved it. Only thing to bear in mind is that sometimes the bags used to have quite a strong smell, sometimes sort of a cheesy smell. I used to tip the sacks into a dustbin to keep it in and then I used to stand them out in the fresh air with the lid off (on fine dry days) to air it and the smell would ease slightly.

This was about 3 years ago so I dont know if it is still the same.

Didnt put me off using it though.
