Am I entitled?

My mate is about to be let go from his petrol station as it is closing for 16 weeks due to refurbishment. In his contract it only mentions about being given a weeks notice. Is he entitled to redundancy at all?
Any help would be much appreciated.

How long has he worked there? If under 2 years then he would not be entitled to statutory redundancy pay.
If he has been working there for more than 2 years, then he would be entitled to at least two weeks' notice - it's one week for each completed year of service up to a maximum of 12 weeks. How much notice (time) has he been given?0
