New Home Owner - Please help me choose suppliers

Options
Hi All,

Just completed on a new house.
We've been living in Mum's large property and have just paid a flat rent.
So i don't really have any idea of what our bills have been, but also we are moving from a large bungalow to a smallish three bed 2 storey semi.

Our new house currently has no gas meter fitted, so i assume i have to call British Gas to supply and fit a meter.
Also it has electric storage heaters, these are being ripped out and a new central heating system installed.

I would say that although there is only two of us, we are probably higher than average users of both gas and electric.

Can someone offer any views on who would be the cheapest suppliers for our gas and electric.
I've tried the switching sites, but as i don't have anything to compare with it's been difficult trying to get accurate information.

Halfway through losing six stone.

Looking forward to early retirement.

I think you are better off in getting a bill from the new supplier ie: british gas / eon and then looking at the compare bill sites as you need something to go on.
  • yes, that's what it thought, but i was just wondering whether any company has spectacular offers for totally new customers!

Try using comparison sites such as UKPower/ USwitch and Energyhelpline using ' average' figures of 3500 kwh for electricity and 20000 kwh for gas. To some extent it depends on the area you live in, in mine BG websaver 11 is the cheapest for Dual fuel but I can get it cheaper by using NPower for electricity and Eon for gas although its always worth checking Quidco and Topcashback to see the best available cashbacks.
  • We are both shift workers and are in and out at various times of the day and night, so our energy consumption doesn't always go down at night like normal households.
    Would this make a difference.

Also as we need to get a gas meter fitted, do we have to go via British Gas?

There are different time in the day that are peak rate and non peak rate so you would probably use more than an average house, my understanding is that having a meter installed you are then tied in to that company !
  • Well, i have no gas meter at all, just a capped pipe. I'm confused as to whether the National Grid fit the meter, then you choose a supplier?
