Quote for new windows

I happened to pop to my Mum's the other day as she had a visit from a window sales man. She had arranged the appointment as she wants new windows and although there was no real hard sell (as she wants the windows anyway), the guy was there for over 2 hours. I told her not to agree to anything until she had a couple of other quotes but after I left she agreed to a quote of £11,000!!! This is for about 10 windows plus a front door and back door. This seems an extortionate amount to me but I'm just wondering what others think. She says that the windows are really good quality ones that have some sort of police certificate for security and are ones that open wide enough so that she can clean the outside of her windows. They have also said that because she has a couple of sash windows (I know, complete sacrilege to be getting rid of these!) it costs a little more to remove these. THe guy had originally quoted £19,000!!! I'm inclined to think that it is a complete psycho trick to get her to think that she is getting a bargain, especially as they nominated her house to be a 'show home' with the advertising placards up for a month and this is part of why it is cheaper. I think that they probably do that with everyone!!! Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks. Nuninge

It sounds outrageous to me.
We had our bay done for £1,000
2 upstairs windows cost £800
the porch cost £1200.
The next ones to get will be kitchen and bathroom and the other 2 bedroom wondows which will be no more than £1600.
So to total, £4, 600 for mine.
I'd allow no more than about 4 or 500 for normal sized windows, ofcourse the bay will be more.
We never went with one of the big companies, we used a local one.

Act fast; she probably only has seven days to cancel. Do it in writing and keep copies. Even if it is a good price (I doubt it, but none of us have seen the job) then it hasn't been properly thought through by your mum and £11000 is a lot of money to spend without at least sleeping on it. If they'll do the deal this week, they'll do the deal next week or next month so there's really no need to hurry into ordering.0

local firm round here does any size window with one opening for £131 supply only, fitting sounds like half day for two blokes so another £250, add £100 for some materials and surveyor time and I wouldn't have thought you should be paying over £500 per window. Couple of grand for the doors and it sounds like a £7k job.
Obviously this is pontificating without seeing the job but the answer has to be get couple of other firms in to look & quote0 -
i budget for 400 per DG unit and then add a bit extra for any bay windows and composite doors.
thats it.Get some gorm.0 -
Unless these are some kind of special windows and doors, then that price is easily about twice as much as it should be.
I don't do double glazing anymore but i doubt that i ever charged anything over 4 or 5 thousand for what sounds like a standard house fit to me,when i was still fitting.
Get rid and get a local company in.0 -
Hello,
To everyone who posted a reply to my query, thank you. I'm hopeful that she does have a seven day cooling off period as this will still give me a few days to talk her round.
Thank you for your advice,

I am not sure the price is crazy but I urge you to PUT IT IN WRITING TODAY, I think the law was changed to extend the 7 days period to 14 but dont take my word for it, but this is only applicable if it was signed in her home not the showroom)
has the company sent in the surveyor yet, if not they have not started the manufacturing process but may have paid the salesman.
The police certificate is probably secured by design the polices prefered supplier scheme. If this is true then the windows (sash especially) may be more expensive
Our installers tend to charge between £900 to £1500 per window but these are highly specified products that are sdb, est, BBA approved and loved by planners

sashmanBuying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run. :mad:0
