Mixer biscuit

I feed my dog on nature diet which is a wet food, and I throw in a very small handful of mixer biscuit as well. I do this because otherwise she'd have nothing for her teeth to crunch on.

I was wondering, is it possible to make my own mixer biscuit? It has got to be low fat because my dog had pancreatitis before Christmas. I want to do this because I use a mixer biscuit which is low in additives/preservatives, and none of the local shops stock it so I have to drive a way out to get it. Making my own would be more convenient and possibly cheaper too, once you add the cost of diesel to the cost of the biscuit! I have googled it but can't find any recipes for mixer.

I do want her teeth to have something to do, I can't give her bones because of her illness, so really it's all I can give her. She can't have dry food because of a bladder problem.

Instead of putting a mixer in the wet food (which is a complete food anyway and shouldn't have anything mixed into it) why not get some good crunchy treats, I don't know what dogs with pancreatitis can and can't eat but fish4dogs do some really good treats http://www.fish4dogs.com/Categories/Dog-Shop/treats.aspx.

I would appreciate a bit of info about the pancreatitis and diet if you would be so kind.
As for the low fat treats I cant help at the moment but I wil make a few calls and see what I can come up with .

Kinski, I appreciate the links, but I'm not introducing anything new into her diet. I know that Nature Diet is a complete food, but I don't see the point of removing the mixer biscuit from her diet which I know she is OK with, to replace it with treats that could upset the balance. I don't know exactly what her tolerence levels are and if I get it wrong I could trigger another attack of pancreatitis, and since that can be fatal I hope you can see why I won't take chances. My dog is 11 years old and I will not take any risks with her. She really doesn't have any treats any more except for half a milk biscuit at bed time.

chris n tj, Tarka is on a low fat diet which seems to suit her. I've got her on nature diet fish potato and rice, but any of the other 'flavours' are too rich and give her diarrhoea including the 'sensitive' variety. She can also tolerate Chappie which is what a lot of people feed pancreatic dogs, but Tarka gets itchy skin on chappie. She gets a tiny handful of mixer which is also low fat, she has less than 1 oz of that with 10oz ND, twice a day. She has half a milk biscuit at bed time and absolutely nothing else. As I said, I won't take chances. This link was the best info I found about canine pancreatitis. http://www.vetontheweb.co.uk/pet-clinic-detail.asp?id=213

No problem at all, my 11/12 year old Shetland sheepdog has kidney failure and I don't know how long I have with her only that it's not going to be long, like you I have to be very very careful with her diet any deviation could make her very ill. There's someone in the local park who's dog has pancreatitis and has had for several years, if I see her I'll ask what she gives her lad, as far as I'm aware he hasn't had an attack for a long time.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog's kidney problems. It's so hard, not knowing how long you've got. My friend's dog has kidney failure and like you, she's just waiting

It's horrible but I've got her on a few things that hopefully will keep her with me for a wee while yet, I hope your girl keeps well and that she doesn't have another attack.

Not home made! But Burns do a hypo allergenic mixer if that would be any use for you? If you check the stockists, in my area quite a few vets as well as shops stock it and if they don't have the product you want they order it in specially at no extra cost:

    http://burnspet.co.uk/products/burns-for-dogs/burns-natural-mixer-dog-food.html

    or buy it online

    http://www.vetuk.co.uk/burns-food-burns-dog-food-c-62_312_314/burns-dog-food-hypoallergenic-mixer-dry-p-3824

Free delivery on all order over £19, most other things are cheaper on there too.

  • I have just started using the nature diet as well and our dog has just diagnosed with colitis and possible problems with her kidneys, undergoing tests and on antibiotics at the moment, I have been using the sensitive ( and boy does that smell :) ) and the older/lite as she is nearly 12 and a little over weight. I too add a little dry food and am using Purina sensitive at the mo and she is doing well now and the vet is happy, only 2 weeks ago she looked liked she was dying, just laying on a tiled floor and not even lifting her head up, bless her but now is eating and drinking well and going out for a walk with the 2 boy dogs again.

I hope you find something to suit your dog, its very confusing what they can and cannot have.

Good luck and hope you dog stay well..

Only difference between mixer buscuits and dry food is meat. Mixer biscuits are basically cereals and fillers. Dry food is just meat with cereals/fillers. Not that I'm disputing what you're saying but there's no difference.

Either way dry food does nothing for their teeth, in the same way buscuits do nothing for ours. Raw carrots are good for teeth if your dog can't have bones.
