How Much Chicken & Rice

Wonder if anyone can help please?
Have been advised by the vet to feed one of my dogs on chicken and rice - easily done, but I forgot to ask in what quantity - sorry if that sounds silly, but I was getting so much information regarding his condition, medications etc I just didn't register anything except what to feed him
He weighs 30kg - anyone know how much weight wise I should give him - we are back at the vet on Monday (or I can call over the weekend) so I can ask then. I plan on splitting it 50/50 chicken and rice. He has been reluctant to eat so I am happy at the moment to (within reason) keep putting food down until he stops eating - he does self regulate his food intake, walking away from food when he has had enough
Any info very much appreciated, thanks

I've fed my dog chicken and rice occasionally. I never weighed it, just 3/4 filled the bowl. Usually 3/4 legs, with a large portion of rice, or a couple of chicken breasts.
I often give my dog chopped meat on top of James well-beloved dry food. Its very gentle on their stomach.0 -

Thanks Sublime - I have stocked the fridge and freezer with enough chicken breasts to sink a ship! I have gone for white rice, but personally I use brown - think it would be OK to use that for him???0 -
When I have mutt on chicken and rice for whatever reason, I do more rice than chicken (cost cutting!) . She weighs about 21 Kg, and I think the last time I did 1 1/2 cups of rice (uncooked weight) with a couple of small chicken breasts over the day. And I use the aldi really cheap rice - no point wasting the good stuff.
What's the reason you're doing it? Just wondering if white fish and eggs might be added as well - cheaper and makes a bit of a change and it's what was recommended for mutt after various dodgy stomachs. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Thanks Elsien. I am feeding him chicken & rice as he has developed colitis as a reaction to the antibiotics he has been on for another condition  So now on different meds for 1st condition (prostate problem complicated b an e-coli infection) and stuff including 2nd type of antibiotic, to treat the colitis. He has basically had severe runs, so I am thinking that scrambled egg (which he loves) may be a good idea, thanks for the suggestion - I think it is meant to "bind" isn't it? I will check with the vets on Monday!
He does not seem to like fish - we have tried it as a treat in the past and he has turned his nose up?
Is it OK to cook a batch of rice for two or more meals and refrigerate it do you think? Or better to cook fresh so that it is warm??
Thanks again for any advice :beer:0 -
Mutt gets colitis - she's currently banned from having any treats at all which is not going down well.
I usually cook the rice in one go for the whole day - as long as you refrigerate it as soon as it cools it should be fine - if you leave it out it can develop some quite nasty bugs though, so be careful. Mutt is happy to eat it cold, she'll eat anything. (Which is one of the reasons she gets colitis!). If yours doesn't mind cold rice, and if the vet ok's the eggs you could put the eggs in to warm it up a bit.
Hope he starts to get better soon. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

I was told our dog had colitis a couple of weeks ago as well as kidney problems, I had the exact same question as you, how much chicken and rice do you give them, I was told by the vet nurse that as she had been sick and not eating then any amount was better than nothing short term, she had chicken and also had scrambled eggs.
I have now got her on a food called nature diet, which is a wet food and you can get it in sensitive, older/lite and other options but there are the ones she is eating as she is nearly 12 and a little over weight.
I mix it with a sensitive dry food so she gets a bit of both and now 3 meals instead of 1 meal a day and the vet is please with her so far, she finished her antibiotics yesterday so hopefully will keep doing well. If you had seen her 2 weeks ago you would have thought she was dying, just laying there, not even lifting her head up it was horrible. Now she is eating well and going out for a walk again.
Hope you dog continues to do well.0 -
Thanks Elsien and Adviceforall, funnily he is normally fed on Naturediet and Vitalin Lamb & Rice Sensitive (mainly because he likes it rather than needing it!), and has 2 meals a day and usually has no problems, so I am hoping once the other antibiotics are out of his system he will perk up. He seems slightly more comfortable today, sleeping in between the bouts of painful pooing
Whereas he has been wandering around crying. He is now on a different painkiller which seems to be helping.
Adviceforall you have given me some hope - I have looked at him and thought he is on deaths door, but have been bolstered by the tests on Friday showing nothing more sinister (had been convinced he must have a growth or something). Vets said just bad luck that he has reacted to the other antibiotics he was on, and to be honest we were all thinking that at first it was all part of the original prostate problem
:( I am feeling guilty about that, but each trip to the vet (and there have been lots) I had mentioned the problems going to the loo and they also thought it was simply one of the common things associated with the prostate.
Hope your dogs continue to do well and thanks again for the advice - I am busy cooking a batch of chicken breasts and rice for the rest of the day (going straight in the fridge when cooled). I got some fish just to try yesterday, but he wouldn't even go near it!
My other problem is getting his pills into him - have resorted to crushing them, mixing them with a dab of butter and smearing it on his mouth so he has to lick it off! He won't touch his food with them in, cannot fool him by hiding in something to hand feed, and he is a s** to get his mouth open to force it in - doesn't obviously realise it is for his own good

When Blackie was ill and not eating I had a job getting the tablets in her but now she is better she eats it mixed in with the wet food really well..When another of our dogs was recovering from an operation I resorted to sticking it some butter as it was the only way i could get it down him but Blackie is just so much easier going than both the boys and didn't kick up too much fuss..I tried wrapping then in ham, corned beef, chicken but Nash wasn't having any of it, would gobble down the food and spit out the tablet???
Things we do for our dogs
It does make you feel guilty when they are feeling poorly and there's mum being really wicked and stuffing horrible stuff down their throats..lol
Hope your dog has had a good day today...0 -
Hi
My dog also has collitus and has had ait a couple of times in the past few weeks.
She is an old lady who is overweight.
I have been giving her pasta and fish for her breakfast and rice and chicken for tea, she is loving it.
I find it easier to mix her medication with the fish, she has her steroid, tremadol painkiller, glucosamine and green lipped mussel so quite abit I have to get into her food.
My Kimber seems to be a lot better although hers tools are still abit orange. Fingers crossed yours and my dog will be ok.
