Ebay- Have anyone else had this problem?

This is my first comment on the forum although I read others comments all the time. I have decided I have to try posting myself as I am worried tonight and would like a few other opinions.

Over the last few years I have sent away for free Alton Towers tickets from The Sun. Although I love Alton Towers and would like to go myself, as I live a long way away and the dates I have received have not worked well with getting a few days off work, I have had to sell them. I have happily sold the tickets on Ebay and the lucky buyers have got themselves bargains.

Last year I applied for Thorpe Park tickets. This was the first time The Sun had offered them as far as I knew. Again the date did not suit me so I sold them on Ebay and the buyer again got a bargain. The tickets were posted & positive feedback left by both parties.

I have now received an email saying that the buyer could not use the tickets at Thorpe Park as they had been cancelled & had to buy new tickets. I have responded to the buyer asking for more information and whether he still has the tickets & am waiting for a reply.

Have anyone else heard about tickets being cancelled? I have not had any problems with any of my Alton Towers tickets in the past. The tickets have only just been taken out of the envelope that The Sun sent them in so there should be no problems with them. Any ideas what I should do as I do not want to refund all the money as I have been charged listing fees and final amount fees, but on the other hand I would not be happy if I had bought tickets that did not work. Can I find out anywhere whether the buyer is telling the truth?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.:(

Lifes a !!!!! and then you marry one:D
  • Thanks, good idea. I have asked him whether he still has the tickets but he has not replied yet, so if he says he has them I will ask for them to be sent back to me and if he has not got them anymore I may assume he did use them.

Its one way of finding out if he is lying or not as he should still have them.

  • Did you have a picture of the tickets in your listing showing the barcode on them?
If so Alton Towers and Thorpe Park etc look through ebay and any tickets where the brcode can be seen will be cancelled as the T&C's state they are not for resale.
This is one reason why people just use the park logo as their item picture.

    Those lucky lucky buyers eh?
  • As Hermionie said, Merlin actively look for and cancel tickets sold on ebay. If the barcode is visible, they can void the ticket.

  • Definitely without a doubt Thorpe Park were cancelling tickets like there's no tomorrow throughout March & April. It happened to me, and several friends. Plus I bought & sold tickets on Ebay, & have had to refund several people. I am currently trying to get refunded myself from the Sellers I bought from originally! Your gentleman may well not have the tickets to return to you, as Security mostly confiscated the tickets with the reasoning that they were fraudulent as they had been sold. They were actually not very nice about refusing entry, and more than once I heard that they mentioned that the police could be called as it was fraud. If the barcode has never seen daylight, they will be ok, but if ever a visible barcode is advertised, the tickets are instantly gonna be no good anymore.
  • Hi, I sold 2 Thorpe Park Tickets on ebay last week and the buyer has emailed me saying that he had the tickets taken off him so he had to pay £80 to get in. Now he wants me to give him £80 to cover his losses if I don't he said that he is going to the Police and the small claims court. This is really stressing me out, will I have to refund him the £80. I have offered him a refund of the amount he paid for them in the auction, at the end of the day I didn't make him pay £80 that was up to him! :(:(

You may not have made him pay £80, but you did accept it, and if the tickets couldn't offically be resold and were cancelled then I'm afraid that you do owe him the money back.

However, don't refund yet but ask him to provide copies of the tickets that he had to buy to replace the ones that you sold him.
Without this proof you have no way of knowing if he is telling the truth.

Sorry, he actually paid me £5.23 for the tickets on ebay but when they were supposedly taken off him, he then paid £80 to get in. I could ask for proof but he could of easily have tickets from friends that went with him. Surely it was his decision whether to go in or not! I would really appreciate any advice or help. Thank you!
