Not all jobs require you to be credit checked, usually just ones in the financial sector. What job was it you applied for?

The only way to get round it if you want such a job is to pay the debts off I'm afraid!
    :p
  • Probably best thing is to get a copy of your credit report and it will show if you have defaulted at any time.

^^^ do this now. Go to http://www.equifax.co.uk/Products/credit/statutory-report.html you pay £2 for your statutory credit report. Don't pay for anything else, just this (they try sell you more expensive products). You can get it immediately but only answering a few questions to confirm your identity. This will detail your credit history, every credit card payment, bank account, electoral roll, etc. Go through every bit of this and make sure it is correct, if there are errors you can raise a dispute. Good luck.
  • The job i applied for was in a call centre, so i don't understand why a credit check was needed...

Maybe the callcentre offers a service to financial institutions which is why you have been credit checked.
  • Usually if the job involves finance of some kind or anything which could leave you open to accepting a bribe etc as you have debts you would be refused .

Did they inform you they were going to do a credit check? If so did they ask you if you had any adverse credit history?

If so and you didn't mention anything then that would count against you. Beleive me they do not care if you owe thousands of pounds as long as you are paying it back and have a perfect credit history.

It depends what the call centre did, I applied for one dealing with pensions and insurance and they insisted on credit checking me because they dealt with financial information (and then finished me a week later even though I had explained to them I had defaults on my credit file and they said that was fine as long as I had told them!) Unfortunatly there's not much you can do about it as any defaults on your credit file will stay there for 6 years regardless of whether you are paying the debts off or not.

Don't forget of course someone could have attempted or succeeded at fraud in your name. Issues like that can take a while to surface. Even an excessive number of credit applications in a short period of time can cause problems.
