I worked for a call centre and the hours were 9-5 mon-sat. If i wanted a day off that fell in a weekend i had to take a week off. I got the job via an agency who said normal 9-5 mon-fri so i accepted. Then it was half day sat, then all sat. After two weeks i left, job centre agreed i had been misinformed as the orginal hours were mon-fri 9-5 as the agecny told me,but they werent. Money isnt everything. I was knackered. I removed this from my c.v. as it will make me look bad ,and started again.

How long have you been looking for? If you just started don't take the first job just because it's money.

If I were you, I wouldn't take it, and would work harder at getting another one.

My advice is not to take the job. The wage is illegal for a start which tells you something about the company. You cannot be made to work unpaid overtime because this would clearly take you even further under the min wage.

They undoubtedly have a high turnover of staff - you will either leave of your own free will after an unhappy and short period of time, or be sacked for not meeting their impossible targets!

Neither will look good on a cv for your next application.

You will gain nothing positive from this - maybe a little money for a short period but that's about it.

There are other jobs you could apply for which will pay at least the same money for less hours - you could do care work for example which would be far more rewarding and get a wage which is legal.

BTW, if you are on JSA you cannot be sanctioned for turning down a job which is below the minimum wage.

Try the graduate talent pool if you haven't already done so.

I havent spoken to him about it yet, hes out all day on a work thing and won't be home till late...I know he'll be unhappy about the hours but there again he might be relieved that Ill be earning some money....

Those 48hours are just BASIC hours, with unpaid overtime is actually nearing 66hours a week

In that case - you would be working more than the 48 hours average specified in the European Working Time Directive (think thats the title of it??). This employer is obviously specifying 48 hours paid in order to try to be seen to fit in with this Directive. I think they might well be on a sticky wicket at trying not to count in the other 18 hours a week.

I would not be surprised to find that they expect you to work even longer than the 66 hours a week as well.....

48 hours a week is a lot as it is - with a workweek being 35-40 hours normally and I personally wouldnt take on any job that was just the 48 hours they state as "basic" - as it would be too long a workweek for me. As our societal norm is that 35-40 hours, then the maximum I personally would do would be 40 hours anyway and I wouldnt even contemplate any extra on top of that. We all have lives to lead and housework to do after all - and that is the reason why we have a job in the first place in the main (ie to fund the "life" and pay the bills).

What with what you have read and the fact that you have already seen personally how unethical they are - and thats BEFORE you started even:eek: - then just how many surprises do you think they plan to spring on you once you actually started work for them?

My suggestion is - dont touch this firm with a bargepole and keep looking for a job. Personally, in your position, - I would take on part-time barwork, cleaning or shop work whilst I kept looking for a job.

I certainly think you would be trapped as well. The only way you would be able to "break free" for long enough to have an interview for another job would be to "pull a sickie" and I cannot imagine this firm would pay you any sick pay for that and would be likely to sack you after just a few "sickies" pulled (even if they didnt find out you were out there "suited and booted" and looking suspiciously like you were en route to a job interview).

EDIT: of course - IF you even managed to wangle some time off for a job interview - and the employer-of-choice asked you why you were leaving Unethical Job - then what would you say in reply? You could hardly tell the truth...

    I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

If it was paying 60k p.a. then I probably would - everyone has their price. 11k isn't it though.

You'd hate yourself, and it's just not worth it.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

This would not do any good for your self-esteem, and you need it to be at it's highest while job-hunting.

I was working for a company that had little regard for my well-being, although it was minimum wage. The manager was a little Hitler who, after shouting at me for 15 mins when I refused to work a Saturday (overtime) turned round and said, I will accept it this time, but not again, I am your boss, I say when you work (by that time I was grinning as I had the best excuse to leave that I could think of!) and I promptly left (after getting them to pay me whilst on a pre-booked holiday).

Before that I had been coming home in tears, was utterly miserable in my work.

    It is not worth it.

Good luck finding something worthy of your talents and your obviously ethical outlook.
