Take the job or avoid?

Ive been put into a horrible situation right now in regards to a job and I don't know what to do....

Basically I've just finished uni and Im incredibly realistic about whats out there - very little. Ive applied for many jobs over the last few weeks and have heard nothing back, except one.
I had a phone-call yesterday inviting me for an interview today and I did a bit of research about the company. I was pretty horrified by what I read - there are many threads on MSE about them. They are totally unethical and especially as I am a member of this site I would feel terrible about taking such job in the first instance, on top of that I have no idea if I could actually lie to people just to get thier money.

Things got worse when I was there, the place is awful and the management horrible people - damn right rude.
I figured at the moment any money is better than no money but in no way did I want this as a life-long job....

The interview went 'well' in the way that the woman just wrote down whatever made me sound good rather than what I said, I guess they don't really care who they employ. But at the end she tells me the hours. 48hour, 6 day week including Saturdays. Overtime compulsory and unpaid, all for a little over 11k a year, worked it out to be minimum wage.

On the one hand I need the money, but on the other my family life will totally vanish and although things could be tight me and OH could survive a few months on just his salary.... Now I should be greatful for a job and all that, I know but I wonder if I take this job am I going to become totally trapped, from what it seems they don't allow you time off unless you book it 3 months in advance so how the hell I would be able to go for interviews Ive no idea....

I honestly have no idea what to do :(

If the company is that bad and doesnt fit with your ethics then don't work for them.

Have you registered with any agencies for temp work? or even registered with specialist recruitment agencies that find work for graduates?

11K for 48 hours is appalling, no idea who they are, but if you dont feel good about it now, how will you feel a month in? Give them a wide berth. /somethnig better will come along.

Whist, yes any job is preferable to no job, if you feel that strongly about not taking it (if offered) then don't.

Whilst you may not approve of them because of being on here, you could say the same about quite a lot of jobs that people do which could have an effect on other site members

How many times have you read moans about the CSA/Santander/Barclays/local council etc - but I am sure that some of their employees are on this site as well

What does your OH think about it?

It's not exactly huge amounts of money.

I think that if I were in your situation (but not knowing your financial situation) then I wouldn't take it purely on the basis of the restrictions/hours etc

I havent spoken to him about it yet, hes out all day on a work thing and won't be home till late...I know he'll be unhappy about the hours but there again he might be relieved that Ill be earning some money....

Those 48hours are just BASIC hours, with unpaid overtime is actually nearing 66hours a week

I would say it depends on how likely you are to get another job. generally any is better than none but if its that bad you may want to leave soon after starting anyway so may aswell keep looking for another job. Btw what is your degree in? Although you have to be realistic 11k is a low starting wage for someone who is just out of uni unless a lot of potential for promotion.

Go with your gut instinct. Don't accept the job if it will make you unhappy just because you are getting paid.

Register with some agencies such as Randstadt, Manpower etc and try a few that are specialists in the graduate market such as Redbrick Recruitment - you may just get a better job that way.

    Good luck.

it would appear to be paying way under minimum wage. No doubt that fact is in the threads on here. Walk a mile.

Agree - just done a quick sum and 11k over a year for a 48 hr week works out to be just over £4.40 an hour. Add into that you'd be doing unpaid overtime and that's way, way below minimum wage.

well its 11k and a little bit...i cant remember exactly what, but I assume this would bring it up to the minimum...Im under 21 so its lower for me anyway (£4.92) but yeah its terrible pay for the hours...

Actually my maths make it even more hours than 48 - actually 54 BASIC hours.... 9-6 6 days a week, 54 right although they are probably excluding an hour a day for lunch so I suppose that would be 48...gah confused
