Is this fronting?

Hi folks, long lurk no register.

I'm a 22-year old new driver, who passed his test first time and has had the licence since 28/01/2011. I have the Pass Plus certificate as well. My father is a 55-year old driver, has driven for 37 years, has 20+ years of No Claims, a homeowner, no children under 16, etc.

My grandmother has a 1.3L Rover hatchback worth ~£250 sitting in her garage unused. She's planning to gift it to me, or my father, depending on the outcome of the insurance situation.

I'm screenscraping on CompareTheMarket, GoCompare and MoneySupermarket. Currently, just with myself as the owner of the car and my father as a named driver, the insurance quotes are in the region of £1,300.

The issue lies with the selection box that all three sites have. It asks, "who will be the main driver of the car?" The answer in all situations is myself.

If I fill in the form as if my father owns the car, he's the policy holder, that I'm the named driver, but that I am the main driver of the car on the drop-down box, is this fronting?

(I totally understand why it might be seen that way, and Dad's concerned it is. The source of the confusion is that I'm constantly telling (the truth) to the screenscrapers that I'll be doing most of the driving. And hey, if it's a loophole, I save £500.)

    No.

(Though you cannot use your father's NCD on this car if it is already being used on another car)

    Hi,

no this isn't fronting - you are being honest about the situation and declaring that you are the main driver. No insurance company woll complain about that

As you are the main driver, why don't you start earning your own NCB - you can't use your father's twice (so if the policy is in his name he won't have any bonus).

You can add your father as a named driver which will help bring the cost down.
