Economical, reliable diesel car for less than £2000 - advice please

Please can you folks recommend an economical, reliable diesel car that can be purchased for less than £2000. I would like to get at least 55mpg from it. I don't care what it looks like (within reason hehe) and what the brand is.

You might get a high mileage Mondeo for that, mine has been reliable so far with 147k on the clock and if I sold it today I'd expect around £1500-£2000 for it. I average ~57 MPG recently.

You're always running a risk though when paying so little that you can't guarantee reliability.

Economical - go for a Renault Clio 1.5 DCi - £30/year road tax too - Had two of them, both returned an avergae of 60mpg urban, 75mpg on a run, and there will be quite a few in your price bracket. Reliablity however, is a big Lottery with a Renault.
