what to do if not happy with home insurance's settlement cheque

I made household claim to my home insurer two months ago. Finally received the cheque and I am shocked about how less it is. I rang the company to ask for a written proof of how the amount was worked out. They said they could not send any written proof and only explained to me over the phone briefly. The axplanation sounds ridiculous and I am not convinced at all. I am planning to return the cheque and ask them to review the case. Just do not know what will be the besy way to do it.

Any advice will be welcome!

    That sounds unsatisfactory.

If possible, send a fax today to say you are dissatisfied with the amount and their failure to provide a proper explanation of how it was arrived at (you can use a "print to fax" facility from any computer with a fax modem).

This will give them eight weeks to investigate and get a response to you. I appreciate that this is quite a long time but the rules say they can have that long.

If you do not answer by then, or the answer you get is unsatisfactory, you can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service. That will be another long wait but is free.

Did they not make you an offer previously so that you could accept or decline, thats the normal way

  • No. This is the first and only letter I received from them. They just said it is the final settlement cheque and they believe I will be satisfied.

If your cant fax them, send them an email.
Follow it up with a letter, and use recorded delivery.

    Not acceptable practice

Just curious, what was the claim for and what did they send you and most importantly what was your excess
