OH won't get his credit report!

Hiya,

Currently in the process of going for our first mortgage. My OH and I are just waiting for a chunk of his back pay and his guaranteed overtime contract to boost his salary.

Anyway, I've spent a very long time fixing my credit to get to the stage I'm at. Because it's a long process I've been signed up to both Experian and Equifax and check them regularly to make sure that there are no nasty surprises or errors.

OH has good credit but has only had credit for just over 6 months. Credit Card he pays off in full each month and a mobile phone contract. He used to have a few catalogues but I don't think he's used them in a long time and always paid it off in full.

So we're getting everything ready and I said that he should get his £2 statutory credit report to make sure there are no errors, everything is correct, he hasn't got any random people pretending to be him etc and he got really annoyed and started to argue with me.

He said he doesn't need a credit report, if any of the information on there is wrong it's not his fault and he shouldn't be reprimanded for it. Even if there is stuff wrong on there then it will take "ages" to fix (basing it on my experience with electoral register stuff and an unfair default which is now wiped). He really, really kicked off.

I tried to explain to him why it was so important and if there was anything wrong that it was better to see it, fix it and then not get turned down for the mortgage otherwise we could be back to square one.

He's very good with his finances but very private with it. In fact he would much prefer me not to be on the mortgage so that we have more disposable income and I can finish paying off the £2k I have left on my credit card and overdraft.... but I can't seem to get through to him the importance of checking his credit report before we proceed.

Any advice people?

Can't really force him. Only time will tell when you do the first mortgage application.

Even if you have a good credit file and 999 scores, this doesn't reflect on how lenders will look at the proposition especially if they are not targeting the first time buyer market.

That seems a bit extreme, kicking off at your simple request?

You sasy he is private with his finances, what do you mean by that?

If hes private about his finances and in control then I sugest you take his word that is is OK.

When you start looking at houses get your Mortgage Broker to run a Decision in Principal with a lender, if it passes then you should be fine, if not then you need to find out why, and if its a problem with his credit only then should you push him to find out what it is.

Dont understand why getting the mortgage in just his name will change the household disposable income though. Whether its in 1 name or 2 it still the same payments each month!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Buying a house together is something that is a long term and binding contract - if you can't even agree on something as simple as getting a credit report then are you really ready to commit to this together?

To me, him 'Kicking off' doesn't really sound good either over something like this - it's not just the mortgage you might need to consider but whether you're actually compatible for the long haul.

Good luck, I think you'll need it!

Sounds like my OH tbh... he thought i was mad for wanting to get my credit report.

He had a call from debt collectors a while ago about a mobile phone, it was totally not his fault and all sorted out, but i'm still concerned they might have put a default on his file!

He's also owed £400ish in overpaid tax from 2009-10, and his tax code has been wrong all of 2010-11. But can I get him to sort it out? NO!!! (HMRC will apparently sort it out in the end, despite them only knowing where he lives now because I told them)
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard

Perhaps wants a smaller mortgage. There's more to life than borrowing the maximum amount of money you can.

    Hiya,

    Thanks for all the replies.

Yes, I do think the reason he got a little annoyed was because I have a tendency to come over a bit "naggy".

In terms of us as a relationship we are solid as anything and this is the first time anything has happened. From my impression it seems to stem from two things 1) his mum and dad split up and his mum still owns half the house his dad (and us) live in. He's worried that his dad will be left with nothing if she decides to divorce him. Thus he's a bit wary and 2) He has this old fashioned view to "take care of me" I currently don't pay any rent to him or his dad because he wants me to save up and even if I didn't have the last bit of debt to clear he wouldn't take anything from me. He always says that he wants me to want for nothing etc but I insist on paying my way.

I'm sure it'll be alright in the end but I just found it confusing that someone who is so actively up for getting on the property ladder and getting a mortgage would miss out such a basic thing. I'm just a very curious person I suppose though and would want to know whereas he might not neccessarily.

And yes, he doesn't want us to overstretch and is worried that later on when we decide to have kids that we might lose my income and be scrimping etc.

    Thanks guys!
