Deceased mother didn't declare all her savings!

how dare you refer to any elderly person as being stupid! I assume you have taken appropriate measures to ensure your well being in old age, or are you typical of the younger generation with a live now to hell with tomorrow attitude!
It really would be a good idea if someone who's new did a bit of research before saying silly things like this - if only to stop themselves looking a total idiot!0 -
Well if you do google search for "BBC watchdog DWP" you will get an eye opener to just how bad the DWP behave toward the elderly and genuinely ill. It's absolutely disgusting!
To be honest, all my dealings with the DWP have all been perfectly ok and I have no complaints. They certainly dealt with my Mum's worries quickly and very pleasantly, so I cannot comment on your posting."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

I am a Pensioner myself.....and an elderly person can act in a stupid manner the same as a person of any other age.
I will never go without food or heating if I have the means to pay for them. THAT is what I said was stupid - to have the means and then CHOOSE to go without.
So, just stop being so stupid!:)(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Quite agree SDW!! Why all old people are supposed to be sensible and pleasant is beyond me!!! Some are downright nasty and idiotic!! I've never subscribed to those who say old people get grumpy with age, I think they've always been like that, it's just when they get old, they think they have the right to say and behave how they want!!
As for the op, I cannot see what the hassle is?? Her mam was overpaid, which TBH sounds more like a mistake than fraud, then just get a figure off the DWP, and come to an agreement with them to pay it back when the house is sold - job done!!! It has to be paid back, so the reason for the overpayment is now immaterial!0 -
I agree, I think the sooner you find out how much is owed and pay it back it the better,it will be one thing less to worry about, rather than having this hanging over you. I wonder how many elderly people or their families find themselves in this position, I would imagine its more common than we realise. Many elderly are very frugal, they were brought up in an era were you make do and mend, and not spend money like its going out of fashion,my grandma wasnt on welfare benefits she got a pension from my grandad when he died. we were amazed that when she died she had managed to save almost thirty thousand pound. She never went out, never spent money on any clothes, only spent a small amount on food, so probably quite easy to save that amount0
