Wallpaper in kitchen, tile splash back....

Hi, today i was supposed to take delivery of a new gas oven to replace the one I already have. The delivery guys/fitter turns up and says to his mate after looking at the space where my old cooker is-'not a chance'! I ask what the problem is. He says I have wallpaper on the walls and a tile splash back and one of those big cooker plug sockets on the same wall as the cooker and that's not allowed! He says I have to get rid of all free or have an electric cooker! Is this correct? I'm a housing association tenant and all these things were there, when I moved in 11 years ago. When I explained that I've always passed the annual gas inspections, he said I should have been pulled up on it!
Now I really want a gas cooker. Is this correct and if it is, I'm assuming my housing association has to sort this out as they put the wallpaper, splash back and cooker socket in there, not myself.
Thanks.

Hi,
I assume they mean that it might be a fire hazard.
I know that gas cookers have to be fitted to a chain., fixed to a wall.
If your wall is tiled all the way to the skirting, I assume he means there would be no way of connecting the hook for the chain to the wall.0 -

Directly behind my gas cooker I have a gas socket which my cooker is plugged into and a electric cooker outlet to connect a electric cooker. Housing association checks this annually and are satisfied with it.0 -

Hi, thanks for the reply. No the tiles are not all the way to the skirting. And there was a chain on the other cooker. My Housing association also check this annually and have no problem, so I really am stumped!:(:A Your Always in my heart, you never ever will be forgotten-9/9/14:heart2:0 -

Hi Traveller,
Again, done a little research for you, as my Hubby and I are HA tenants ourselves.
I don't know about you yourself but our HA use their own private contractors for heating & gas annual safety inspections.
therefore; they have their own rules or hidden agenders.
To save all arguements and to make sure you know what should and shouldn't be there, before you approach your HA on it, please feel free to check the Gas safety (Installation and use) regulations.
Your HA contractor should themselves be Corgi registered so, I can only assume that you have purchased your new cooker privately, as if your HA cleared the last gas safety inspection, there should be absolutely nothing wrong therefore; I would seriously suspect what the delivery guys told you.
After all, theres a big difference between some guy whom delivers cookers ad thinks he can fit them to an actual qualified, registered and licensed Corgi Engineer.
Hope this helps!0 -

Thought I'd better just mention that Corgi doesn't exist anymore. All gas engineers have to be registered on the Gas Safe register now. You can check any contractor/engineer on this website:

You should always make sure anyone doing anything with your gas supply is properly registered/qualified.0 -
