Problem installing DVD writer - 'Secondary drive (0) no found' message

I have taken delivery of a new DVD writer drive for my PC. The PC is a Dell Dimension 3000 which originally came only with a CD-RW drive.

I have slotted the drive into the PC below the exisiting CD-RW drive and then I attempted to connect the IDE drive cable from the new DVD-RW drive into the spare slot on the motherboard - but the size did not match up (20 x 2 pins on the cable connection versus 16x2 pins on the motherboard).

So I disconnected the original CD-RW cable from the motherboard (since the DVD-RW does everything that the CD-RW does so I dont need it) and I connected the DVD-RW cable in its place and it fitted perfectly well.

When I booted up the machine I got this error message:

'Secondary drive (0) not found'

Then it gives the option of continuing by pressing F1 and setup by pressing F2.

I did F2 and it came up with a DOS type screen. I tried going to the drives option and it just said 'AUTO' under some and 'OFF' under others.

I exited this screen and let it continue booting up. The drive does not open up but under the hardware list it shows a long number which I think is the new DVD drive.

But the drive doesn't seem to have installed and I keep getting the above message on boot up.

What do I need to do to successfully install the DVD-RW??

Any help appreciated!

L

I have now reconnected the original CD-RW and used the middle bit of the cable to connect the DVD-RW up.

I do not get the message now but the drive does not respodn when I try to open it and it doesn't seem to be showing up in the hardware profile....

    ....any ideas??

    Thanks!

have you changed the jumper on the back of the drive ?,if you have a look on the back of both drives what ever the jumper is set to on the cdrw ie master make the dvdrw slave or vise virser, hope that makes sense

Not sure I know what you mean - im not very clued up on jumpers, masters and slaves etc (or not in this context at least!).

on the back of the drive there will be either 6 or 8 pins together & a plastic clip(the jumper) over 2 of them, above the pins it might say cs (cable select) sl (slave)ma ( master)if its not on the back of the drive it will be written on the top,as i said above what ever the cdrw is jumpered to ie master jumper the dvdrw to slave or vise virser.

Another thing I've noticed - when I connect a power cable to the DVD-RW, on rebooting the PC seems to go dead when it reaches the Windows screen. No blue bar zooming across the screen as usual.

When i disconnect the power source and reboot it asks me how I want to start Windows - I chose manually and it started as normal.

Which power source should I use to prevent this problem? There are several covered cables labelled 'P4', 'P6', 'P8' of varying sizes. I just used the one which fitted into the DVD-RW power socket.

  • Problem fixed - it was the master/slave issue!
