The above assumes a tank with dual elements. If the immersion heater is only single element the boost will also heat the whole tank. I came off economy 7 and use my boost to heat a whole tank of water as required.
That can be a little bit more expensive than using low night rates to heat the water and allowing for slightly higher day rates. Assuming you don't use electric peak rate heating.

The larger the tank and the longer the immersion needs to be on the more savings will be made by moving day usage to night.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • My next years [ based on last years consumption :

    - 5733 kWh (Day
    - 5363 kWh (Night)

I'm retired so my day / night split is near 50 / 50%
    If you are a student it's prolly nearer 30 / 70%
#7 you should never need to use [ boost ] day rate, leccy should be exclusively night rate
    - - - have a look at the hot water tank - does it have two sets of thick wires [ 1 at the top & 1 at the bottom ] coming out of it ?
    - - - have a look at what you call your boost switch, does it have a name printed on it ?
    - - - if it is always on as others have said its wrongly wired
    - - - #8 what other switch ?
#1 you cant count the 6 cold months as the annual average, your rads will be turned off next week for 5 months an 80% reduction
Who do you pay your leccy bill to ? who said you had """ apparantly used 7144 Kwh """ ?

I now have two split heat pump units so I switched from E7 to single rate as my electric consumption is required at peak rate.

sorry, its a 2 bed apartment, with storage heaters and hot water immersion tank, i hardly ever use hot water but the tank is always on

Just out of interest wondered how you use the storage heaters. Mostly they should have output turned to No.1 when you are not in room and only turned up when you are home as that way you only use the heat you need. They should certainly not have the output turned up at night as then the input charge just heats a room you are not using and wastes the heat you need for the evening when you are home.

Can't think why anyone would have immersion on continuously when there is cheap night rate and only you in the place. Two of us manage on one tank of hot water with showers, washing, etc. unless you have a bath every day.
