Dell Studio 1735 battery / motherboard issues?!?

Hi,

I've got a Dell Studio 1735 that started to tell me the battery was on the way out after 18 months (maybe a bit more). One day the battery stopped charging and when it ran down completely it wouldn't charge up at all. Problem is that I've tried powering up the laptop while plugged in and no success. I've taken the battery pack off and tried to power up from the wall, no success.

Weirdest thing is that when I plug in the wall adaptor not only does it not power on (with the battery attached or not), the light on the charger goes off and I need to unplug it from the wall and plug it back in before the light comes back on.

I've been looking at various forums and it's looking like the motherboard has gone pop for some reason, any ideas? I've tried taking the RAM, etc out and nothing's making a difference!

Basically, help!!

Cheers:beer:

That means the SMPSU has either detected a fault and is shutting down to protect itself, or (more likely) the SMPSU is failing when placed under load.

My money is on the latter, because I just can't see any manufacturer spending money on self protection for a device that only costs a few quid to make.
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.
  • The fact that your power adapter loses the LED glow when plugged into wall raises a concern - Could the power adapter be f**ed?

That would explain why 1) The laptop battery isnt charging 2) The LED intermittently cuts out on the adapter 3) The laptop refuses to power with the battery out.

Do you have a spare adapter to test and eliminate this as the cause for concern?

Thanks for your help, is it easily fixable / replaceable?

    Cheers

Hi, I've tried 3 chargers and they all work with my work laptop and all die when plugged into the Dell.

I wish it was something so simple! :D
  • Has to be the connector in which your adapter plugs into. Is the laptop under warranty? If not, call Dell and ask them how much it would cost to fix.
  • Well, apparently the power jack socket is broken! So I need to replace it, seems pretty straight forward unless anyone can correct me and say it isn't?

I would say that its probably not the power connector. When these fail they will usually be open circuit due to solder joints/wires breaking. The symptoms you describe (LED on power supply going out when plugged into the computer) indicate a short circuit which to be honest could be a component failure anywhere on the powerlines of the system. An electronics repair shop may troubleshoot common failure points (voltage regulators, protection diodes, screen inverter etc) for a reasonable price but a repair could turn out to be uneconomic.

Just one thing however since the short could be anywhere you could, if you feel able to, is to disconnect everything possible... RAM, wireless card, drives and screen if you can and see if the LED on the laptop powersupply stays on when you plug it in... might help you to identify a defective component.
  • you can buy a new one On the purchased, the battery is really great. We buy batteries can go and see!
