How that price is made up in terms of VAT, profits, cost etc... is all down to Dell. Not you.

You may be right, but it may also depend on how the cost is broken down on the invoice. If it explicitly shows VAT calculated at 17.5% then it's clearly in error.

However, the fact that Dell have immediately factored (if that's the correct word) the debt rather than trying to collect themselves might suggest that they aren't confident of their case.

Whatever the reason, it is (IMO) appalling Customer Relations on Dell's part - they certainly don't deserve any credit for the way they are handling it.

No, it doesn't matter one bit. The contract is done, Dell has charged the customer 17.5%. As long as HMRC collect 20% from Dell everything is fine.

    To quote

"What if the shop mistakenly charges too little VAT? The tax is for it, not you, to pay. So it cannot ask for extra cash if you've already paid or signed a contract."

    I agree.

I really don't think you need the IMO there. What they are doing is downright illegal.

If these was a biz to biz transaction then maybe there might be redress, but biz to consumer. Price has been paid and that's it, finished, no more. No sorry we undercharged you, tough.

How many times have we seen threads where there has been a mistake on price and we've all tried our luck to get it? If that transaction had been delivered, legally it would stand.

No different just because it's VAT involved. The deals been done.
