Replacing York stone front door step - advice?

My house has a tiled front path and should have a york stone front step (just a single step). For reasons unknown, the previous owner had the step replaced with a horrid white concrete step which has a very lumpy surface and is impossible to keep clean. (It seems to have been installed all over the original step as it is box shaped. All the other steps in the street are a York stone slab on a recessed base).
We very much want to get it replaced but there is also the associated disruption to the tiled path as well which has seen better days. The only quotes we have had to date for replacing this have been ridiculous (seriously, for a run of about 3 feet by 9 feet £2000 labour only excluding materials. One done nearby recently was about 1.5 days work.)
So while we search around for a realistic quote for the path, we thought we might at least make a start and have the front door step replaced. Anyone got any idea of
a) how much this might cost (York stone slab, base, fitting etc - step is probably 2ft 9ish by 3 foot)
b) if it can be done in advance of replacing the path as well?

Check out local quarries or natural stone suppliers in your area.
Tiled pathway will be a job for an experienced tiler. I am assuming that the path is a Victorian, geometric pattern of quarry tiles?
You will need to get a tiler in to make a decent job of it. I would estimate £80-£100 m2 excluding materials. Which is why it might be worth trying your local tiling shops to find a recommended tiler who can do it properly.

For the doorstep, try your local monumental stonemason. They often have offcuts or reclaimed headstones from redundant graveyards. We have done the floor of the downstairs toilet using them.0
