hi im trying to write a letter on word and was writing and correcting as normal but now i think i've clicked something and now if i try to rewrite an error it swallows up the rest of the text

You've clicked the Insert button! Usually to be found just above the Delete button, this useless and annoying key does exactly what you describe - it will make you overtype text.
There's no way of actually disabling it in everything (short of prising off the button), but you can disable it in Word by following these instructions:
