Removal costs

I'm in the process of getting some quotes on how much it would cost for removals of stuff our of my house as I'm moving in a few weeks. Could anyone give me a guideline of how much it should cost and any recommendations of firms to use?
I'm quite happy to pack all my stuff myself (don't own very much thats breakable) but I'd obviously want them to shift all the furniture out of the house etc. on the day. To give you an idea of how much stuff I've got (I presume this makes a difference on the quote they'll give you) I live in a two bed terrace with Mr. Charlton Taz....so we've got two personsworth of stuff!
Also, (as I presume its relevant) We're moving about 15 miles.
If anyone has got any recommendations on firms to use (or not use!!) we live in West Berkshire.
Cheers

It isn't possible for anybody here to give you an idea of what the removal costs are likely to be. There are too many variables with things like a removal.
There can be vast differences in the quotes given by different firms also. But what I now do is get at least 3 quotes from proper removal companies, not the man & van type of operation, & go for the middle price one. I've learnt to my cost that cheapness is definitely not the best when choosing a removal company. I've had a lot of good quality furniture damaged in the past by trying to get the cheapest move possible. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Also dont just go for the large firms, when we moved about the same distance we used a local compny (in Kent, sorry!) and it was just a guy and his son with a large box van - they did the move in two trips and it only cost about £200.
Since then my parents and in-laws have used them and they've been great every time.0 -
Could you move yourselves? We've moved three times, collecting more and more stuff with each house, and everytime have hired a van and done it ourselves.
You need to be quite strong though and make sure you get a good nights sleep the night before(!), the last time we moved about 250 miles, so it was exhausting, and I swear the washing machine was heavier when we unloaded it than when we put it in the van!!!

JUst for guidance, local family removal firm priced us at £600 to move 10 miles (3 bed house).
That was a year ago and included insurance.0 -
Bear in mind, the busiest day for moving house is a Friday. The removal costs may be cheaper if you move house on a different day?!0

Thanks for your advice everyone. We've had some firms round this morning to see how much stuff we've got, so we'll get the quotes next week! Exchanged contracts now though so moving in two weeks..hooray!0

Try Bishops Move in Wokingham 01189 780111. I used them B4 and the staff were great.0

Cheers. I'll give them a ring.

Hi Charlton taz,
My advice was car boot or ebay as much stuff as you can get away with if you haven't used it in the last year chances are you are not going to!!.The less you take the cheeper to move.
Take as many boxes to friends and family (or whoever will lend you some space ) and collect it when you are ready, say a week or two after moving in. I always like to have a really good clean before i start to put my things in the new house, no one ever cleans like you do yourself. You can't do this with stuff all around you.
Good luck and i hope you love your new home:-)0 -
we moved just before xmas from Berks to bucks about 2 miles:) and had quotes ranging from £400 to £1200.
Guess which one we went with and yes they were great.
The company was chandlers in maidenhead.
