in Credit cards
I have an MBNA Credit Card which I only have bout 600 pounds on I am just paying the minimum each month at the moment. I telephoned them to order a new card as I wanted to book a hotel room using it & they said they would not send me one as they are closing it down once balance is cleared. Can they do this?? I had no letters from them about this? My credit limit on my statements still says I can spend on it?? I just don't have a current card in my possession (so I cannot purchase) as it snapped so I threw it in the bin. :-(

Surely you already have a card? Or is it you need one with a longer expiry?
In any case - yes they can close the account if they wish.0 -

Yes they can but MBNA are a devious dirty trick company. They will put your interest up, raise your credit limit and put it back down again with no notice. Credit check you if you apply for another card that is run by them i.e Virgin or Sony card and then after rejecting you for the second card you applied for the will reduce your credit limit on your main (first) MBNA card.
Just think of it this way getting rid of an MBNA card is GOOD RIDDANCE TO VERY BAD RUBBISH.
I have more respect for Vanquis than I do for MBNA.
Scum company I hope they go out of business. As far as I am concerned they are the worst credit card company going.Iva started Dec 2018.0 -
well I've used a number of cards with them for many years with no issues.

They seem to love not making money out of me!0 -
I am an experienced stoozer with a high debt to salary ratio but a perfect payment record.
I have had problems with mbna doing similar things:

but they are not the only company who think they can well-run close accounts at will, in breach of their own terms and conditions. Nationwide have just done the same to me.We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
The earth does not belong to us.
We belong to the Earth0 -

Yes I had a card that was within the eXpiration date but it was damaged so I threw it & rang for a new one but they declined & did another credit check etc for me to re-apply???
My partner has an IVA so the Credit check was refused obviously!! I just think it is unfair That I should be affected by bad credit that aint actually my histiry it is his!!!0 -

Credit scoring in general is unfair. It does seem a bit harsh they won't actually give you a new card, but they can do what they want alas. And as other posters have said - MBNA are total pirates. Can't wait to pay mine off totally and burn it.0 -

Seems reasonable for them to make decisions on more recent information that might affect how much money they are prepared to lend you.loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.0
