  • we had a lot large privit hedge very near to the house & back door. for years we were plagued with very large house spiders..i mean really big. my husband called them Harvest spiders, they always seemed to be in the house around september time when the weather was turning colder. We eventually removed the hedge as we were building on the house, and we replaced it with a fence. since doing this, the problem has seemed to disappear....!

The MSE way would be to use conkers, put them in corners and near doorways, they are supposed to repell spiders with the 'smell' and is supposed to work quite well.

The non MSE way would be to try a sonic spider repeller, different types and frequencies, the variable ones are supposed to be best, prices from about £15 to £30ish pounds, some seem to work better than others, look at reviews on amazon etc, there are a few threads about them here, just search 'sonic spider'..

Thanks :) Given the time of year I doubt I'll find any conkers so will look into repellers (they don't affect rodents aswell do they?my son has a pet mouse lol)

The sonic spider repeller might well adversely affect your pet mouse as the same devices are sold as vermin repellents.

We have one ourselves, which soon got rid of the mice and also dramatically reduced the insects in the house (except it doesn't stop flying insects blundering in on hot days.)

The dog can hear it too, because if you switch it off, he immediately looks in its direction as well as when you switch it on again. Other than that, though, he totally ignores it and it clearly doesn't bother him as sometimes he lies down and snoozes quite close to it.

This really does work well. Just be aware if you have any cats the conkers will not stay in the corners for long! They like to play with them!

I have a 'no more spiders' spray from a garden centre which has horse chestnut oil in - definitely seems to work. I spray it on the outside windowsills, door frames and round the fireplace to keep the creepy beasts away. Not sure about eggs but will be checking back here in case anyone has a solution <shivers>

As do lizards, frogs, ladybirds and birds...all of which I like, don't have 8 legs and up to 8 eyes and don't scare the living daylights out of me:p
