As you have been advised of this, and that is now on record, it will be used against you to prove negligence in any civil or criminal proceedings that may happen after such an accident.
How could it be used to prove negligence?Negligence.
Conduct that falls below the standards of behavior established by law for the protection of others against unreasonable risk of harm. A person has acted negligently if he or she has departed from the conduct expected of a reasonably prudent person acting under similar circumstances.
Noboby has stated that the car was in any way unsafe or dangerous to drive, and by the examiner issuing the MOT certificate they have effectively stated that the car was totally roadworthy at that time.0 -
Ok, now lets suppose they do nothing about it and an accident happens 11 months down the line when the problem is a lot worse and the subsequent investigation shows that the faulty steering contributed to the accident.
A reasonably prudent person, upon finding that their steering was failing, would get it fixed* before it got into that state, or stop driving the car, therefore negligence.
*or at least get it investigated and get some form of written confirmation that that level of play is normal for that particular model of car.0 -

Do you drive for a living, Strider.
That's an easy way to encounter all kinds of crazy situations. I used to do 60,000 miles a year, for 6 years. You see a lot.0 -
According to https://www.motester.co.uk
*Free play allowed depends on type of steering: 75mm for non-rack and pinion, 13mm for rack and pinion steering. Where there are several joints between the steering wheel and the rack, up to 48mm on a 380mm diameter wheel may be accepted.
As others have said free play means the steering wheel can turn a distance before the wheels turn or vice versa.
It may or may not get worse before the next MOT but it certainly won't get better. If you are worried get it fixed otherwise check it occasionally to make sure it's not getting worse.
If you have an accident it's not going to count against you unless the steering causes the accident and the play is so much it's outside of MOT limits.0 -

He screeched to a halt with his front wheels facing different directions, it was so amusing that we turned around at the next island for a "victory lap".
But on a serious note, play in the wheel could mean a track rod end, don't risk it!
Heh. You told me this when I posted asking about a strange MOT Advisory on my 206 not long ago.
It sounds like you have something against the 206 or that you think they are only driven by boy racers or something.0 -

3" of free play on the steering box on my car?
That's about a quarter of a turn.
I'll be ok for a bit then. :rotfl:0 -

Or, perhaps, the story has equal relevance to this thread as it does to yours?0 -
