  • Thanks to those who provided useful suggestions. Nobody is coming to break my kneecaps and no one has visited me. In fact I can make my own payments, and have been fully covering my bills for several years, it's just that organisations only seem to see the trouble you have been in, and don't look at the fact that you are now coping. My problem is that I need a lump sum.

Jackyann, I did appeal to the CU and the person I spoke to agreed that my situation did not fit their policy and sent me a new set of application forms. It was declined again. So I asked for a payment holiday so I could pay my bill (PhD fees). Someone rang me the same day and said I shouldn't do that and she would take it back to the committee. That was about a month ago. I haven't heard anything since and decided it might be best to just leave them alone. It is humiliating. Before anyone says anything, I have not stopped paying them and wouldn't unless they agreed to it.

The solution I have come up with is to try and get half of the amount now, or close to it, and ask them to let me pay the other half the following month.

Jules28, thanks for sharing your story.

Jules28 is a shining example if how things all too often go wrong, I thank her input too.

Glad you are sorting it out yourself, good luck :)
