cutting granite worktops

Hi,
Weve bought some granite worktops for out new kitchen but they need cutting (sink, hob ect...) Is this easy to do? My oh is going to do it but im scared that if he makes a mistake, however small...its gonna show up alot!!
How much would it cost to have a pro in to do it for us?

Any tips or advice for him will be very appreciated!

    NO!

my son works in a granite factory, he said it would cost about £400 for a sink cut out, you are right to worry as one wrong move would ruin your whole worktop. get a professional in to do it.

A polished sink cut out is around £200 plus any drainer groove required.

There's a reason granite countertops are expensive, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the cost of the raw material. On a £3000 fit I'd be suprised if the cost of the stone was much more than 20%, the rest is labour to pay for the specialist equipment required to cut the stone along with the knowledge of the stonemason.

Have a look on line at a company called Harris Slate & Stone
Your Local branch is at the Ikea junction Of Nottingham M1. They have a granite cutting plant In Leigh. You Need to speak to a Gentlman called Grant I have lost his no.

( I Used to work there upto September ). You will be expected to pay for the cutting and the quotes you have been given seem reasonable.

There is also a company who's name escapse me. Based in Matlock it is an Italian sounding name.

The usual thing to do is to make a plywood template for the top exactly the same as you want the worktop to be complete with cut outs to make sure everything fits in ok and then give this to Granite workers who will make an exact copy.If you have bought the tops from some one other than the people who are going to cut it then I doubt they will guarentee not to break it as cutting is not without risk.

one other option for this sort of work is a headstone company (as in cemeteries) - most headstones are granite and they have the kit for cutting., drilling, polishing etc.

They might even put on a nice dedication in gold lettering for you :D
