Windows software equivalents for Linux

I'm on the verge of fully switching over. Actually not quite fully will still need Windows for .Net work and gaming, but Linux will be my main OS.

Was just looking for suggestions on Windows equivalents for Linux, or thought it'd be good to make a list for anyone else here. So far I've found the following:

iTunes > AmaroK
Winamp > XMMS
Nero > K3B
Adobe Photoshop > The GIMP
Gmail Notifier > CheckGmail
Microsoft Office > OpenOffice
Microsoft Money > GNUCash
MSN Messenger/Trillian > Gaim
Windows Media Player > MPlayer, Totem-Xine, or VLC

I like interoperability, so Firefox is great between Windows and Linux as my profile with work on either. Anyone know of FileZilla on Linux?

Also I'm still looking for a nice equivalent of AutoGK, Core Temp, Intel Thermal Analysis Tool (basically a decent Linux temp monitoring app, one that can preferably read from the core rather than the mobo sensor).

I'm using Ubuntu and Swiftfox and I downloaded Google toolbar and I can check my Gmail from there plus I wanted the spellchecker. If you join the forums you can get advice there. They also cover other OS and will also answer any questions you have . I swiched over 8 months ago and I would not go back.

You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.

Yeah I'm registered. It's ok. I find the Ubuntu forums very busy, so decent threads can get buried quickly, and there are far more newbies than there are experts.

Probably the 2 things preventing me from ditching M$ permanently are Photoshop and Office (in particular Powerpoint & Excel).

I've recently tried open office and whilst the Writer prog. is excellent (on par with word I would say), the suite is let down by the other packages. The spreadsheet is *ok*, but the presentation software - Impress - does anything but (impress).

Yeah know what you mean. Photoshop is still in a league of its own. I like using it, but never use it to its full potential, so GIMP is fine for me.

And Open Office is good for the average user. But I think when you start doing a lot more advanced or integrated stuff, Microsoft Office show its colours more.

  • you can look at lm_sensors for monitoring temps and voltages. not sure if you get any nice gui's though.

You can get photoshop to run on linux using wine apparently, see here: http://blog.publicidadpixelada.com/2006/10/10/how-to-adobe-photoshop-cs2-on-ubuntu-10-steps/

So did everyone start off by dual booting?

Would Mono be sufficient for whatever this work involves?

Ah no. I think I'll always develop in Windows. Well for the time being anyway. .Net is a Windows based platform so it's probably best to stay in the environment it's meant for.

The Mono project is doing well, although is always one step behind what's currently available. I think they're still adding .Net 2.0 libraries, when .Net 3.0 is now out.

The main ones I've not been able to find decent equivalents to are DVD Decrypter and AutoGK. Still I've seen tutorials on how to get these running in Wine.

Oh, and TrueCrypt. Nice and easy to use in Windows, but a bit of a pain in Linux.

I've switched over from Gnome to KDE. Definitely find it more consistent and polished.

These look rather promising: The latter is the more comprehensive of the two, but is not quite as easy on the eyes. Both mention FileZilla.
