Zurich Car Insurance - Expensive?

Options
Have 4 years NCB and they want to charge £850 for a 2000 Mondeo fully comp?

Direct Line offered £633, that was the first place I looked.

Zurich simply said "well, maybe its not as good a policy". No effort to match it at all.

Thanks for listening, rant over.

After 4 years, im taking my wallet elsewhere :)

I cannot comment on the level of cover and service provided by DL -v- Zurich but it does vary significantly between insurers. Going for price alone can mean that you find yourself uninsured as you assume that something you had with company A is also provided by company B as you switch because company B is £200 cheaper (eg driving other cars is no longer on all policies)

  • Thanks for that info - I always thought insurance was insurance and the only thing that differed was if you had full comp or 3rd party. Anyway I always use Ford and you do not have to have a Ford to use them. I bought a new Ford once and had free insurance for a week then stayed with them ever since.

Car insurance traditionally didnt vary that much but this is changing. Home insurance etc is where the real differences are between policies (including policies from the same Group)

Why would they want to match it? If all companies charged the same there would be no point in having different insurers fighting for your business would there?
Just because they were more expensive for your particular circumstances doesn't mean they're expensive for everyone.
In any case Direct Line's policies aren't anywhere near as good - they strip out cover to give a cheap price. If u make a claim better keep your fingers crossed!

It's a question of whether you happen to fit the profile of the market they wish to insure. I recently changed to Zurich, who quoted £198 fully comp, protected max NCB, on a 2002 Octavia 1.9 turbodiesel - less £65 cashback via Quidco. Shortly after the policy started, I changed the car for a brand new 2.0 model and was delighted when they advised me there would be no extra charge. They also gave me 14 days free cover on my old car while I tried to sell it.

One of the things I like is that, unlike so many these days, the Zurich policy doesn't sting you for spurious "administration" fees when you make a change like this.

Would totally agree with that! I got charged £211 on a 2002 Seat Toledo 1.9 SE TDI, with full NCB and protected no claims. Plus the obligatory £65 Quidco cashback (now up to £80). This INCLUDED free Green Flag Roadside Assistance as well. So, for me, they were virtually unbeatable.

My current car insurance is with Zurich due for re-newal at the end of the month. I thpought the policy was a good one when I took it out seemed to cover most eventualities. I have not had my re-newal price from them as yet but I was thinking it was time to start looking for new quotes. Based on the assumption that Zurich will be a high quote because I am already an existing customer.

Do people think this is a fair assumption ?

I'm with Zurich and it was the cheapest for me, just beating Churchill. Came out at a shade under £800 for an 06 Merc C-Class. Also when my neighbour decided to drive into me they were very efficient at getting everything sorted.

I've just moved from Zurich as my policy went up (no claims or anything to justify it), I switched to Post Office which was nearly half the price, got £22.50 through Quidco and £50 cashbach from PO.

Left Zurich because they became uncompetitive (by a £200 margin!) when I wanted to add my 20 year old daughter as a named driver. Egg would do it for much less.
