OK how RBS work is beyond me, 1st incident: Mid afternoon I withdraw £30 from cash point, later that night go to online account, shows £30 deducted from account, leaving £75. Next day go to withdraw £20 insufficient funds, look online see that a cheque for £100 (not guaranteed) hits my account RBS pays cheque then the £30 that I withdrew day before is presented thus placing me £25 over drawn???
2nd incident: Still £25 overdrawn 5 days later Money Shop whom I got an advance with 3 cheques (2 of which bounced) decided to get the rest (£125) via my Visa debit (info written on backs of cheques) placing me £150 over drawn. Point is I have a basic bank account with no overdraft facility... Please I am lost

I don't fully understand. But what I would say is that you don't seem to be keeping very good track of your finances.
If you are writing cheques and not allowing for them as soon as they're written that's an accident waiting to happen.
Similarly if you are authorising transactions with a visa debit card then then the bank (any bank, not just RBS) has no choice but to pay them.
I suspect you are trying to juggle expenditure that's higher than your income. That doesn't work! I can tell you from personal experience (It's why I joined MSE).0 -

You don't have a basic bank account - basic bank accounts don't provide cheque-books.
You might mean that you have a *standard* bank account, in which case there might not be an arranged overdraft on your account, but that doesn't mean it can't go overdrawn.
As pmduk says, it sounds like you need to improve your money-management skills. The Debt-Free Wannabe board would be an excellent place to start with this.0 -
Can you avoid writing cheques? As this does cause a lot of problems, they have an expiry date of 6 months and people can deposit anytime between then. Alternatively to make it easier, withdraw your money that you need to use for the week and do not use card.0

I don't think you can argue that it's anyone's fault but your own. I used to work in the RBS collections department and so many of the people that ended up there had done exactly as you have e.g. written cheques and not left enough in their account to cover them and using short term lenders such as the Money shop who can charge your debit card whenever they feel like it. Operating your bank account in this manner ultimately ends in you receiving lots of charges and being even worse off.
If they haven't already done so, RBS will be sending you a letter asking you to call them to set up a repayment plan to clear the debt. Having your account in the collections department will be affecting your credit file. As long as this is a one off and as long as you set up a repayment plan and clear it ASAP then it shouldn't hurt your credit file too much So my advice would be to learn from this and stay well clear of writing chq's and using short term lenders.0 -
Call 08457242424 to sign up for online banking...it's free and it'll help you keep track. Then ask them for a free money saving review which, if u call during the day, they should be able to do immediately.Debt-free day: 8th May 2015 "Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck," Dalai Llama0

Well Thanks to all for your replies, thought this is the case and will just have to bite the bullet, and be skint all month... Yes I am living way over my means, have had online banking for a while, does not seem to work, problem is I love to spend money even when I don't have it... Funny thing is when I was on the dole I survived on £130 fortnight now I take home £1300 month and is gone by the 7th or 8th day month???
Any Way Thanks for all your replies0 -
People survive no matter what the income. If you have jsa you spend it, if you earned 2k a month it would still not be enough.0

You could possibly phone the bank and try to arrange a repayment plan. However, this won't deal with your main problem: your overspending. Best of luck.0
