advice needed on ecar insurance

Despite being an avid user of moneysavingexpert I have to blame myself for not reading the previous posts and warnings on ecar.
I have been living abroad for a while and now have returned to the UK due to my wife being very ill in hospital. I needed a car and just bought an 11 years old fiat punto. I have 7 years NCD from my previous insurer Direct Line but it is 2 years 11 months old so couldn't use it with any insurers other than direct line. The quotes that I got were so expensive so I decided to put my father in law as main driver and myself as an additional driver. My father-in-law has 9 years NCD so I put that and got a nice quote from ecar: £334. I purchased the policy and paid the full amount online. The policy started on Monday at 10 am.
After I realised that the NCD can only be used with one policy and my father in law is already using it for his car. So I emailed ecar explaining the situation and asking them to please requote me with 0 NCD. After 4 or 5 emails from ecar employees with rather interesting names like Josh Channelle, Melanie Valentine or Katie Rivers (for some reason they sound fake to me) they told me that in order to be able to provide me with a new quote I had to send copies of both driving licenses. This was after I read all the threads on ecar, so I decided not to bother and emailed back asking to cancel the policy. They haven't got back to me yet. I emailed them back confirming I had read terms&conditions and asking them to cancel the policy from 21:00 pm tonight but obviously they haven't done so.
I understand I will be charged £75 for cancellation fee plus 2 or 3 days of insurance as this has been in place since Monday. But I got the feeling they are going to be cheeky about it and either make it hard for me to cancel or pull some extra charges somewhere.
Has anyone been in this situation?
Is the 14 days cooling off period actually useful for anything?
I know I should have done my homework but things shouldn;t have to be that complicated either.
Any advised is really appreciated.

Regards

ps: my intention is to go ahead with direct line as they accept my 7 years although they are nearly 3 years old. Still the quote I'm getting is far too expensive for an 11 year old fiat punto 1.2. they are quoting £750.

that's what I thought! And that's for third party only and I'm going to do less than 3000 miles a year. I'm 37 so not young either. It's unbelievable really...
