Old Record Player Cable help

Hello,

I was recently given an old record player (a Technics SL-J11OR) and want to hook it up to my amplifier. The only problem is that the record player used to get its power via the amplifier that it came with and I want to connect it to the mains separately (as my amplifier does not have the correct connection).

I have uploaded a photo of the end of the cable here:

Does anybody have any idea of where I could get the lead which connects from this to the mains?

Thanks,

Lenny.

  • I don't see why a standard C13 IEC cable connector would not happily fit into the C18 (two pin) chassis socket.. .. .. .. alienRIK, an opinion please !

I've seen these before, it looks like a non-earthed kettle type socket (C18), probably used here so that people are unlikely to attach other inappropriate high wattage appliances to the amplifier.

Check the back of the record player, if it's rated for standard UK mains electric (i'd suspect it is with this choice of socket) then there's no reason why you can't attach it with a spare 3-pin kettle lead (they're designed to be compatible) or just cut that inlet off and attach a 3-pin plug. Only thing is be sure to use the right amp rated fuse in the lead or plug for the record player.
  • Cheers for the responses.

I will investigate further tomorrow and let you know how I get on.

Looks like a female end for a kettle lead.

I would identify this as a C18 cable mount male connector.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_connector#C17_and_C18_connectors states that C18 will connect to C13

Hot appliance' IEC mains cable connectors have a cut-out at the bottom which mates with a ' safety seer ' on the C16. A C18 inlet would have a double insulated symbol.

The earth will not connect anyway, there isn't one, and the sub on the chassis does not want a mains safety earth connection anyway.
