If it were me, I'd either not use the 2CV with your child in it or sell it and get something safer and more modern. When we had a baby the main thing I was looking at when getting a car was the NCAP rating, then practicality. This is why I bought a Laguna and sold a car I really liked.
A 2CV would offer no protection for either of you in a collision with anything modern.

On the other hand, it could be argued that cocooning your child and not exposing them to any physical risk could have an advese afffect on their mental upbringing.

Oh god, how did we ever survive in the 70s and 80s given all those cars are deathtraps. I'm surprised our race wasn't wiped out!

A 2CV will be fine providing you are actually pay attention. I probably wouldn't want to take it on motorway runs either, but it sounds like it's being used as a city car.

2CVs are also great for today's potholed roads since one of the design goals was to give a smooth ride over a ploughed field, so less chance of injuring your child by the jolt from an unexpected or unavoidable hole in the ground. They're good in the snow too!

I wouldn't drive one myself, but I can appreciate them for what they are.

Just because we had these cars back then, doesn't mean we should ignore the massive leaps in safety since then.It wasn't so long ago that we didn't have to wear seat belts, use child seats, no rear headrests, drum brakes all round etc etc.
I like old cars too and although I wouldn't have a 2cv I like their quirkiness. For transporting around your kids though its a no-no for me.You can pay all the attention you want, there's always the other idiot who isn't.

Sagaris - we have a Britax Asis. DH has the isofix bit in his car, and the car seat can be used with a seatbelt too, which is quite handy really.

Even as a pedestrian you are not safe from 'the other idiot' who decides that you and your pushchair aren't moveing out of the way quick enough, so deliberately tries to run your pushchair over.

I drive very carefully in my car because I know that I am faced with cars built to withstand the impact of a tank, whereas my car is quite soft in comparison. When I drive other vehicles I don't take this in to consideration, so drive slightly differently.

Having crashed into a pedestrian at 50mph, who drunkenly wandered into the road, a 2CV is safer for pedestrians. She had a cut on her head, and my car needed new bonnet, wing, headlight.

I would like to see more older cars on the road. They are usually driven more carefully, and are safer for my child, should he decide to wander in to the road.
If having different experiences, thoughts and ideas to you, or having an opinion that you don't understand, makes me a troll, then I am proud to be a 100% crying, talking, sleeping, walking, living Troll. :hello:

Change one of the rear lap belts for a longer one.
    http://www.securon.co.uk/seatbelts_layouts.htm#lap

Two bolts to remove yours, then if you measure yours, fully adjusted out, and add on whatever you need, then choose a sutiable size from the guide there.

    Probably something like this one

but I have fitted 217E to the back of my motorhome, they go out to 1.5m.

I think it might have to be a lap and diagonal belt - I don't think that seat fits with a lap belt only?
