Could it really be a tax rebate?????

Hi everyone - really need your help.

when we got home last night there was a letter for my OH from the inland revenue.

in the tax year 2003- 2004 he was working in a pub for pretty much next to nothing and apparently (according to this letter) the 1st £4000 and something you dont pay tax on as its a personal allowance?? but he did pay the tax (and we think too much tax) and it says hes owed a rebate of £1250!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No cheque arrived with the letter though and im sure when i had a tax rebate years ago, the cheque came with the letter??

We're calling them this morning just to verify it all as we dont want to get our hopes up!!:o

Does this sound right to any of you?? have you had anything like this??

It will be interesting to hear what they say, like you I have always had a cheque with a tax rebate letter. Maybe they are going to send it seperately because it is such a big amount? Fingers crossed for you!

We really dont want to get our hopes up!!

My mums an accountant and she looked at the letter last night and says it definatly says hes owed it and shes goining to call them this morning for us (we dont understand all the letter !!) she also says that as its from 2003 - 2004 you can also ask for interest on the money!!!!!

As soon as i hear anything i'll post it to let you know how we get on

I'll be gutted for you if you don't get it but from what you say you should be for an unexpected windfall! Has your mum phoned yet?.....

This may be obvious, but are you sure there isn't a cheque attached to the bottom of the letter, they come all in one these days rather than a seperate cheque.

Depending on current earnings and payments they may just adjust your tax code instead. So this year instead of say £5085, you would be able to earn £9000 odd tax free

I think now, they prefer to give rebates direct to the bank account. , saves al the claims of 'I didn't get my cheque'

You may well qualify for supplement (interest) but, it won't be a lot.
