I think my smart car just broke - front body dipping right down to the ground

Just to update, I managed to get the car to a local garage very, very slowly, the spring on one side had gone. They order 2 in overnight from Mercedes at £36 a spring and quoted £100 to fit. I had no choice it was not drivable and quite relieved they could do it today.
Worst thing though, they called today to say the brakes were shot and the discs, metal grinding on metal, to be fair you could hear me braking before you saw me and they had gone ahead and ordered new ones. Funny how it passed the MOT without a problem the end of September though.
Total cost for everything 398.00!:eek::eek::eek:
Off to look at a new Smart tomorrow. I've had 7 good years from this one and this is the first bill I have ever had but I think things are going to start going wrong. It has a whistle from the engine when I accelerate, so whatever that is I'm sure will rear it's ugly head soon as well.
Thank you everyone for your help!:)0 -

Not it isn't - that was over 6 months ago.
The MOT just confirms that the condition or the car complied with legal requirements for the few minutes they were doing the test. It means nothing else.
How many miles have you done since then?British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

Tilly, let us know how you get on if you're looking at a new Smart, even pm me, i used to have a W reg Smart42 a few years ago and sold it on, I bought it off Ebay and enjoyed a great run home to Scotland but it was noisy, without going to the Smart dealer it would be good to know what another smart user thinks of the new one.
Good luckThanks to all the competition posters.0 -

...and time and miles since the last full service? (Because that is relevant. The MOT isn't)British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
i had a smart for2 brabus, loved it to bits, but was no gooc in snow so had to go, plus having 2 kids if the main family car, (the then freelander TD4) was off the road we were in trouble.
When i first bought the smart car i found out about evilution.com, it a site for smart owners, basically an online haynes manual come owners forum, and on there smart owners say that this is a common problem, and you can get it fixed for free by merc (dont know what years it cover), depending on age.
Another thing is to google "smart car recalls" as this will tell you which aged cars were supposedly recalled for what.
A friend at work had his springs go but never claimed.
It doesnt come under the recall part but somewhere on evilution.com (I think) it does give you the code that the dealer uses for common faults that you can use to get a free fix for.
8066 comes to mind for some reason but without search the internet I can't be sure.
Just have a google see what comes up.
If u have to pay a local garage to do the work, then get a receipt and take to local merc dealer and claim all your money back. (would recommend finding the appropiate code on line 1st)
Hoe this helps
Chris
